Can we see the room? I like a leather bench for what your use is . Any farbric will take a beating from luggage . The other option is a luggage rack and a nice chair to sit in while putting on shoes etc. We have 2 folding luggage racks in the guest room closet I just pull them out when guests arrive and place at the end of the bed.

I'm quite sure I want a bench. We had folding luggage racks and nobody used them. Many of our guests have slouchy bags rather than structured suitcases. We have plenty of room for a deep bench.

I saw this on Room and Board and the measurements are almost great:

• Leg Thickness: 1.5"w
• Legs: none are removable

It would be great if the legs were 3" taller. Any way to add height to legs like this? They are not removable.

Search online for leg risers, caps and extenders to see of there is an option that raises the R&B bench by 3” in an attractive and stable way (IIRC from your other post, elderly parents may use the bench for seating).

@Design fan - I started looking at extenders for a R&B bench and it was making my head hurt trying to find ones that would fit these square legs!

Stores should carry one senior friendly line of their furniture. It would be incredibly helpful. I have the marketing already figured out in my mind, it is called Sit Friendly.

I think it would be easier to have one made since you are so particular about the size . Pretty simple constaruction too.

@kendrah - Ethan Allen will also let you select different legs for their benches. This may help you get exactly what you are looking for.

Wandered in to an antique shop yesterday and found this black bench with gold nail heads. Not what I envisioned for an end if bed bench but works with our eclectic tastes, is a decent size, well made, and I’d be thrilled to not support a fast furniture company.

If I purchase this for the end of bed, what color should I use to reupholster the wingback, for a second small armchair by the window, and for cellular shades?

(@JenniferHogan - I visited Ethan Allen, the bench was very cheaply made. They have certainly gone down hill. How disappointing!)

18” should be high enough for a bench used for seatinf, that is the height of most kitchen chairs.

Solid as a rock, and nobody is spending the day sitting on it. I have used it repeatedly. If you want different upholstery or no tufting? To the upholsterer you go. A one day event for any shop, especially with no tufting

Jan, Arhaus is a good size, not a good color for guest traffic. Is Arhaus sturdy/quality enough to pay for reupholstery? Never sat on their furniture. This Arhaus thread scares me.

Last weekend my parents stayed in the studio, we brought out a card table, and played for two hours. Determined it would be great to have this bench comfortable and sturdy enough to sit on for a length of time, not just to throw bed pillows on, which I suspect is what most bed benches are used for.

Your search for ready made, 100% perfect to you, with the quality of fifty years ago will go on forever. Perhaps longer. If you can afford that city and your real estate in that city? You can afford the bench and the redo. It's 20" inches high and deep and 54 long. You are not going to find better.

Price, quality, delivery. Pick two.

I would want something softer for a bedroom. Wood and upholstery vs metal and leather, but you have to love it.

And one can do that in pick your stain, pick your own fabric, wait ten weeks and USA made. Figure no less than 2000.00 with delivery and more depending your fabric

NYC is as generic in offerings as any other. RH, West Elm....Pottery Barn, DWR , Jonathan Adler, Room and Board yes great antiques stores. Same fast food here and planet earth. Nobody else can afford the rent. Even ABC Carpet and Home looks as any other.

Better? Get in a car, go to Pa. and Amish country. Have it made. .......

You nailed it Jan. NYC these days is a big mall on a grid with flagship big boxes. Same as everywhere - the sales person knows less about their products than you, and takes you to their computer so you can surf their website together. Small shops cannot afford the rent and those that can are majorly expensive and not open to the public. Thank god the food and culture is still great here because the shopping ain't! Half our furniture in here is from Buck's County car trips.

I think we'll go back to Tarrytown tomorrow to purchase the black bench. 49 w x 20 h x 21 d. $1975 on 1st Dibs, $780 in store, and owner is open to negotiating. We'll be done with it and then I'll wring my hands over cellular blind colors and final wingback upholstery colors.

@Diana, You are a designer and I bet could find more here than the average lay person shopper such as myself. It is depressing, though not surprising. Remember all the old Martha Stewart magazines that would features random crafts people in NYC, like the guy who sold old cabinet keys?

Trust me, designers deal with the same thing. If you asked I would tell you, I am forced to Chairish, 1st dibs for any client who leans even slightly traditional with case pieces. The formerly great antique stores here, (upstate) are gone. Rent, and the answer is......they're on 1st dibs too.

Other than that, the market is..........homogenized.

Charish and 1stDibs are an irritating way to shop as a consumer but as a pro, that must really change the way you work. Do you try to see a piece in person or are you able to suss out the condition well enough online?

The mark ups are insane too, though I imagine Charish and 1st Dibs charge the vendors a lot. If I find a piece I like on either I google image search it and sometimes find the same seller posting the same piece at a lower price on another site.

I’m not doing much design work anymore. For my last client we did bathrooms and a home office with built in cabinets so I didn’t need any furniture. I would think you could get very good quality traditional furniture on eBay, estate sales, and thrift stores

My DIL got a gorgeous mahogany double pedestal dining room table, 2 upholstered velvet hostess chairs and 6 side chairs At estate sales in her neighborhood.

UPDATE: Bought the vintage newly upholstered bench. Perfect size, very firm seating. Hope when it comes time to style the whole room with throws and a few lumbars that it will look more at home in here.
