Anyone remember the topic when I asked about gifts for DS's girlfriend's two little girls who liven with him? Well, it's official. They're engagedIII I will now have four grandchildren instead of two. When I first met the youngest last year when she was 3, she immediately called me grandma because that's what everyone else called me. I told her other grandma about it and she's perfectly fine about it.

At Thanksgiving I was standing in the kitchen when Lily (precious name, short for Lillian) came from the LR just to say "I love you grandma." I swooned.

Speaking of gift bags I picked up an order at Nordstrom yesterday. It's next to the gift wrapping station and they sell very nice cloth bags for $5.00 each, regardless of size.

I like the idea of the cloth bags.

For many years at home we had Christmas boxes that got stored and reused over and over again.

For many years Saks provided solid boxes, all red I think, at Christmas, and we had a lot of those for a long time. We were careful to not tape directly to the box. Brooks Brothers still has blue solid boxes I think.

Pal, I always save the solid boxes for future gifts as long as they're in good condition. This is the box I ordered for DGD's Dala Horse. Very heavy duty and she'll be able to put things inside.

Lidded Box

The cloth bags from Nordstrom are not flimsy or lightweight. There isn't a fabric tag but they feel like a cotton twill and the inside is a flannel-like lining. I was surprised at how nice they are.

I love my flannel bags from Company Store. I have bought them only when they're on sale. We visited DS for an early Christmas last weekend, and I brought all their gifts in flannel bags. Afterwards, I collected them all and put them back in my suitcase LOL. Sorry, I need these again in two weeks. I pretty much only use them for family so I can have them back! I use regular wrapping paper or gift bags for other gifts. I have a huge stockpile of gift bags that have come to me with gifts in them and I re-use them as long as they still look good.

Oakley, I did order some of the boxes you recommended from A several weeks ago. I haven't used them yet but they look nice. I ordered red and green boxes so they don't really need to be wrapped.

I had been trying to find cute small boxes to pack home made candy and I gave up because I ran out of time. They were sent in a Christmas zip lock in a gift bag. It was one of those times where I swore I'd seen them everywhere and when it was time to buy I couldn't find anything.

I have a lot of pretty gift boxes from Home goods, too, and they nest. I don't like the way bags look under the tree, and it is also harder to use my ribbon for them. Other times of year, I like bags for gifts, esp for adults.

Yeah, i mentioned the paper source boxes in Pal's thread .. i thought they were a good price.

I use bags for about 50-60% of my christmas gifts.. there are soooo many packages to wrap. I don't have the patience to wrap them all. I do like that I can get matching or coordinating paper and bags at Caspari!

My IL (here she goes again, complaining about the ILs) remove the gift from the box or bag and hand the box box/bag immediately, and I mean immediately, back to me. I don’t understand that. Why don’t you keep it and reuse it? I’ll reuse the ones my gifts came in and you reuse the ones your gifts came in. I can almost guarantee you’ll see “your” bag next year.

The strangest time was when the gift bag represented the actual gift (a trip to Longwood or maybe Philly flower show and there weren’t actual tickets to wrap). It was done so they could display or reuse the bag and attached silk flowers. Because I wasn’t going to be there on xmas day, I said to my husband DO NOT accept the bags back, tell them to keep them as part of the gift. When I saw the bags back at my house I said did you forget to give these? No, they asked him do I want them back and he said yes I do. No! I specifcially told you I didn’t. He is often part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Have a group of friends that do a monthly get together and do a gift exchange at Christmas, each attendee brings a single gift and goes home with a gift. We usually play a game to determine what gift we end up with, when a choice is involved I always pick my favorite gift bag. This way I end up leaving with something I like.

About an hour ago I found the Mother of all Bags which has become a family joke. It's 19 years old, thick white paper with rope handles. I would put as many Christmas gifts I could get in it which saved a lot of time going back and forth to the car. When the day was over I used it to haul our gifts back home. They know that no one gets my bag.

I mentioned I planned on mostly using gift bags but I remember how kids love unwrapping their gifts, so I used half and half.

Loading up the mother ship tonight to take to DS's this weekend.
