I think your installer was correct in NOT cutting the countertop. IMO, you always cut or adjust the more workable material - in this case, the trim.

If I were you, I would remove all of that trim, and look for ideas that would finish off the tile with a professional look.

The details should have been discussed before any cutting was done. Pros and cons of each option should have been discussed, with the homeowner making the final design choice.

I would probably cut the molding in this case. It could be cleaned up and caulked and painted.

It also looked like the original cabinets butted right up to the moulding and that's all the room there was. Sometimes spaces are tight and I don't think most people would elect to lose cabinet space or have to do something non standard just to avoid a conflict with a piece of door trim.

Going shallower depth on a cabinet next to a door is not a huge loss of space. It would have prevented the operations issue that now exists.

Except that those are not new cabinets. It's a new countertop on existing cabinets.

Here is a photo of how I think the molding/countertop should be. I saw this after my install. My molding can't be as wide, but I could make its edge line up closely with the countertop front.

You notch the wood, not the stone. Which is what was done. Case closed.

The installer is okay returning to notch the stone. The molding discontinuity looks odd to me, but I'm getting the impression it's not unusual.

If he notches the counter - then you have a gap there in the molding, no? Do you think it will be that easy to seamlessly match the molding piece that was removed?

Leave it alone. After completion and 2 weeks - you won't even notice it.

I would replace the entire length of molding from floor to top. The notch would be wide enough to fit the replacement molding.

I am afraid once you see the counter notched, the trim will not look so bad notched.

Site cutting that stone notch is jumping from the frying pan to the fire. Not going to look good at all.

I think this is 6 of one half dozen of another. I think the continuous counter looks better.

Cabinet refacing and door replacements are in the works. I prefer not to waste good material, "PRO". The cabinets are all wood and structurally sound.

Does this prevent the current louvered door from opening?

Why wasn't the wall repaired prior to counter installation? I know you are doing a backsplash, but I think it would have made sense to do that.

The door trim in my hall bathroom was cut to accommodate countertop. It looks perfectly fine to me (except I see a couple nail holes that need to be filled).

Your trim looks a little beat up so if you fix that and the wall I don't think it will look bad.

What if the installer returns and notches the counter and the notching is off a bit? It wont look good either.

The opportunity to have the countertops installed came up before the other work started.

After seeing badgeral's pics I realized what makes it look strange. It's the counters extend past the molding into the doorway that my eye doesn't like.
