Most styles can be purchased with sidelights. The door can be solid with all glass sidelights to keep the cold from getting excessive at the front door, but allowing light to come in.

Any door with a lot of glass will be colder, which sounds like a consideration in your case. Your house is lovely, and a traditional paneled door will look great.

Thanks. When you say traditional does that mean paneling vs straight lines? I am wanting to be sure what that means. It looks like possibly a similar style to what we have which I think could be ok as long as we don't loose glass. I don't really like the metal in the glass that we have today. Would it still fit the traditional style if we had plain or frosted glass?

We are considering a fiberglass door if that matters. The door that is here current is steel and has a lot of dents as result. I imagine the he could be less on a fiberglass door.

I don’t think that black doors get hot. I have been told that black doors sell houses faster but never that the color radiates heat.

You can find most door styles in fiberglass. It’s a good product.

Before we posted here we were considering a Craftsman style door. That is what I think is shown in our main post?We were really only considering the all glass sidelights because it was more glass plus less panel looking like it's the rest of the house and maybe more up to date. We want to slowly move the house away from the era it is stuck in. We like the soft black idea and if you don't think it would get to hot with a fiberglass style door we might do that. This being the case do you have one you think might look good? I wasn't sure which exactly you were refering in one of your earlier posts. Does the soft black fade?

What other ideas did you have for changes on the outside?

Any door that faces south will slightly fade the paint on a door even with a porch overhang. Ask me how I know.., my door is “confederate blue” but I’ve done a quick repaint of it since moving here 8 years ago. We have a 5’ deep porch but it faces south and we live in the south. The soft black will look good for a long time.

We haven't really thought about any other changes yet aside from maybe a small sitting area perhaps between the front door and garage. Do you have thoughts there? I think a soft black it is. Would you paint just the door or sidelights too?

It's personal preference but I like the whole thing painted the same color (i.e. framing around the door and sidelights same color as the door. The white framing around my door is vinyl so it is not painted, but you can see that the wood framing on the door and sidelights are the same blue.

I suggest getting referrals for a landscape designer (unless you have some talented gardening friends). Even if you don't follow their suggestions plant-by-plant, they can give you great ideas. OR, you can post separately under Landscaping to see what the talented Houzzers suggest. I agree that the front needs something "inviting" but not necessarily a sitting area.

As, it's gonna be too much light in teh summer, so it would be best to use a light paint on teh door as the dark color will absorb more heat and will increase the temperature. So, whatever you choose, make sure the color is light, You can with white, off-white, ash white as these will be fine.
