Building a Home

I need help selecting the entry door color.

We are in the final 3 weeks of our custom build, and although we had selected a color for the entry door to be painted, we are having second thoughts. I need some suggestions. I don't want the door to get lost in the current color scheme.

I've posted 2 pics. In the 1st pic I tried to paint in some columns which have not been delivered yet, but will go in the locations that I have put them on the front porch. They will be the same almond color as the trim, and there will be clay colored shingles on the garage windows only. The clay color is in the tan/green family that is the same tone as the shake and trim.

Any suggestions with color swatches, if possible, or any Sherwin Williams paint color would greatly help me. With all the decisions I've made, I'm burnt out and really need help with this one. Thank you!

I am wondering if the places that are dark below the shaker siding in the eaves are complete or if there will be something else in those areas.

With or without I think a dark colored door. In a charcoal or dark brown that matches the roof and the areas I referred to would look beautiful. I think that it would tie the entire house together.

Thank you for your response Petesmom. You are right, the areas below the shaker aren't complete. The shingles will be repeated there. We originally selected a dark reddish brown door in Sherwin Williams 2838 Polished Mahogany, but my interior designer thinks that the door will get lost in the dark brick, dark mortar, etc.

That made me second guess our decison. Thanks again.

Thanks everyone! You all were very helpful in thinking through how the door will look with the other elements of the house. I have the same gothic style grille in several dormer windows above as well as some other decorative elements so I think that the solid door will best pull all of those pieces together. Also, I really want the transom to stand out and not blend in with the door below. I must say...I was definitely leaning the other way as I think the second door is beautiful but your input helped me visualize how it will look when combined with the windows, etc. Thanks again! Carsonheim - I'm getting it from a building supply company but I'm not sure who their supplier is. The woman has been great. She has called several supplies and gotten quotes for me in various wood species and other options. I think I'll be very pleased with the door assuming it is what she's requested. I'm waiting on confirmation on some of the details but it is very reasonably price...at least compared to the initial quote I got for the same door.

Thanks for the follow-ups. I am definitely expecting to spend some $$ on the project; want a nice look with quality door(s). I think I'd prefer the look of double doors again, even though it would be more expensive. Was thinking of Mahogany (real wood), but several of you guys mentioned fiberglass doors. I checked them out, and would prefer the Jeld-Wen vs. Therma-Tru for this house. But, wouldn't wood still look better? Without an overhang, I noticed that wooden door manufactures won't give you a warranty. Does that mean I shouldn't use a wooden door? Thanks!

Sorry, I just don't see the craftsman style working here, windows OR door. I'm not coming up with a door that would permit you to look outside. I see a solid door or one with two rectangular lights at the top -- you'd have some light, but couldn't see out (and no one could see in). Think twice about hanging shutters too narrow to (visually) completely cover a window. If you are going to paint the door, don't spend a lot on wood good enough to stain.

Putting "in my opinion" here so I don't have to reitterate it throughout this note. :) I have to mirror the earlier suggestion to get rid of the shutters. When they very obviously would not cover the window they are flanking, they look extremely out of place. Before I saw the stone close-up I was thinking "BLACK!" But now that I've spent more time on the stone, I would avoid black. I lived diagonal from a pinkey-beige house with white trim and creamy landscaping accents. Then owners painted their formerly purple door & stair rail black, and their house instantly screamed "Candyland" (as in the board game) to me. All I could see when I looked at their house was the game card with the neopolitan ice cream sandwich. Ugh! I wonder how a dark reddish brown would look - one that if you went to the top of the strip would have a slightly pinkish color. Or a dark subdued blue. If you wanted to pull the shutters down, you could use your landscaping options to fill the empty space.

I am also thinking a dark color, I like SW Black Fox...it is a very brownish black. We actually used it for our shutters (our front door is mahogany stained dark..) I would post a pic, but in the pic I have for some reason the Black Fox looks grey, which it doesn't at all IRL.

Thank you Nini. I went by Sherwin Williams to pick up some dark swatches and will take them with me to the house tomorrow. I'll be so glad when this is finished, but then I'll miss it too. Thank you again!
