Do you know if it is a class of nuts or just a specific one.

Something small, crunchy and savory. corn nut? bacon? crouton? frico?

What about pepitoes? They are pumpkin seeds or sunflowers seeds. Neither are nuts.

Almonds, cashews, pistachios, and peanuts are not nuts and sometimes are tolerated by those allergic to true nuts.

She is allergic to tree nuts.

I don't think peanuts would be good a taste sub for pecans - are they allergic to pine nuts too?

Maybe you could make some with just cheese - or toasted sesame seeds?

I think prosciutto or some kind of bitter green (arugula, frisee, radicchio) would taste good. Pine nuts also fall into the seed category and are usually okay for people with tree nut allergies.

Maybe a blueberry instead of a nut. And cream cheese instead of mascarpone.

That sounds good Annie! I served them on Thanksgiving ( cream cheese and glazed pecans). This was the second time I served them and they were a huge hit again. Such minimal effort , looks beautiful, and tastes delicious. I can't praise them enough.

My grandson had a nut allergy and he is allergic to all nuts including peanuts. That also includes peanut oil.

I thought of a blueberry but I think the texture contrast and savory/salty contrast are important, otherwise it tastes like dessert.

I am going to make them using a vegan cream cheese. He said that Philadelphia make a good non dairy cream cheese and top them with the pumpkin seeds above.

For people who don't need vegan, I would not substitute cream cheese for the mascarpone, the latter is just a simdge tart (eg a bit like sour cream meets cream cheese) which works better.

I like the dried cranberry idea.

And I think of cream cheese as being more tart...mascarpone to me tastes like whipped cream, which is fundamentally what it is.

I just think it is more interesting than a dessert, and serve it as an appetizer.

Mascarpone is, in fact, Italian cream cheese. The difference is that domestic cream cheese tends not to be quite as acidic.

Publix had dried apricots and supreme dried apricots. The supreme were softer.

I just bought some mascarpone and don't find it a smidge tart at all. It's bland with a smidge of sweet to me. I've only used it as an ingredient before and I'm thinking the pecan, or whatever goes on top, needs a savory aspect, or else it will just be too sweet. I like the idea of bacon but it won't work for me as these need to be prepped 4-5 hours ahead.

hmm, i may have figured out why i think of mascarpone as rich but also slightly tart.

i buy mine fresh, and the acid used is lemon juice. Is yours fresh? Does it have lemon in it? or cream of tartar?

Mine has citric acid. Just tasted it again. It's lovely, but I wouldn't call it tart at all. The older I get, the more tangy/spicy I desire.
