Gray brick exterior with stone ledge and accent wall - yes or no?
Comments (23)"I'd love to stick with all stone but doesn't work into our budget." A big portion of your budget is going to the 3,800+ sq ft first floor - because you have a 3,600 sq ft basement. The total of your first and second floors is 5,710 sq ft. If you built a traditional 2-story house, you would have about 2,800 sq ft on the first floor (this does depend on garage, though). The cost of a basement foundation for 2,800 sq ft vs. 3,600 sq ft is significant. We are also building on 4 acres (in PA). Have just signed a contract with a builder - but spent months and months on research, looking at plans and driving around looking at houses within 3 counties. We considered a first floor master/first floor guest BR/"1 and 1/2" story house - these make the basements large and not cost-effective. As part of our "research", we bought this book: Get Your House Right by Marianne Cusato. It's an eye-opener. The book explains proportions and elements of classic house styles. You may not want a traditional Colonial or Georgian style house, but the book shows you the concepts of how everything should fit together. Just a thought, may not be large enough for you, but much better proportions without being too "Colonial": http://www.dreamhomesource.com/house-plans/dhs/dhsw55092.html If you are wanting the first-floor master, along with first-floor guest BR, this house is amazing and more proportional: http://www.dreamhomesource.com/house-plans/dhs/dhsw52333.html Good luck!...See MoreDesign dilemma : White or Grey?
Comments (24)It is unfortunate they did not just make the slider larger. That window is really oddly placed. Back in the day I met my future MIL and she was sooo excited and proud as she had just switched out her drapes for vertical blinds in her formal living room and dining room. They looked cheap and hideous then..and they do now. Having hated them for 30 years I also have had to live with them for 24 years. They came with the last two homes we purchased. I solved my issue by covering them with one stationary drapery panel as they are stacked to the side. No one but me knows they are there as we rarely have to close them. Once closed they blend into the window. DH made wood cornices to cover the top workings.Camouflage can be a good thing....See MoreGrey Colour dilemma
Comments (1)As I looked through HOUZZ, anything goes!! I saw grey with tan/light beige/brown and it looks great. I, too, think grey is a cold color, but that's ALL you see anymore. Does anyone have any ideas for a beautiful neutral color that's NOT grey and NOT white, but goes with everything? There is a gorgeous paint at Sherwin Williams that is called Gateway Gray and it has green tones in it, you could go up a few notches and make it lighter. I had it in my previous house and put black accents against it and it was to die for!...See MoreColor and Style Dilemma with Vinyl Siding & Brick
Comments (15)Maybe if you could find a different supplier or source for the vinyl then you might find more color choices in the brownish shades that go with your brick. If the photo you show is your house, I suggest liberating yourself from the shutters on the upper level windows. Then you can just go with a cleaner, more contemporary look (since the window style is contemporary) and you have one less color choice to juggle....See MoreHeather Brookes
