Crossing Christmas Cactus with Thanksgiving Cactus
Comments (52)Thanks, puglvr! It's maybe not as bloomy as the parents, but once I get it repotted and pruned next spring we'll see how it does then. If it doesn't shape up, out it goes. juliana, maybe we would have to do it after you get back, or try to fit in a mailing before you go. I have to look at the weather before May 15, but sometimes it can work earlier than that. Just remind me about it in April and we'll go from there. I'm thinking of repotting all my cc's and giving them a prune job, so it wouldn't be hard to put a couple of the trimmings in an envelope. Anyway, earlier would fit better for me if the weather cooperates. Once it's nice out, I had better be done with the fussing with the house plants because the acre veg garden calls....See MoreChristmas cacti in bud! photo
Comments (14)Thanks , Fred ! I don't know the name of the S. truncata ( the Thanksgiving Cactus ). It was bought at a local supermarket in fall 2003, there was no label. It has been such a rewarding plant, I have potted it up every spring and fertilized in summer, and it has been "doing it's thing" ; growing and flowering. It is full of buds now. - Too many buds in fact ( I started a thread on that subject in "House Plants Forum" ) ! Since I got this red one, I have bought S. truncatas in different colors ( red & white, pink, pink & white, yellow, orange, white and purplered ). So this year I won't go near the nurseries ... ;-) These plants get big, you know ! - Can't have them taking over the house... :-)...See MoreChristmas, Easter and Thanksgiving Cactus
Comments (22)Hi garden, Congrats on all your new flowers!! I bet its beautiful. Since I'm pretty new to them, but can tell you that I am using a fast draining mix, so that the soil doesn't stay wet too long. My mix is a little more complex, but I know a lot of people that grow them with great success with Cactus soil and lots of perlite, or you can add some coarse silica sand(not fine sand)pumice, gravel, or small pine or fir bark mixed in your potting mix. If it were mine and because you live in zone 7 I would wait till spring and definitely after its done blooming and warms up, just my humble opinion...good luck! :o)...See MoreThanksgiving or Christmas cactus?
Comments (9)TC and CC will bloom for quite a long window of time. TC tend to bloom sooner, which is why they're marketed incorrectly as Christmas Cactus.... they have blooms before Christmas, and they sell better when in bloom. Christmas Cactus tends to bloom just a bit later, right about Christmas. TC is Schlumbergera truncata. CC is Schlumbergera x buckleyi, an old hybrid.
