Nice plant! Funny.....the one I keep inside is in full bloom. My outdoor one is budding. My indoor plant blooms at least a couple/three times a year.

Wow! I've never had them bloom more than once a year. It's a long wait between blooming periods.

My fairly young Thanksgiving cactus had two huge buds, and the first one actually opened up. I took it with buds as a large cutting from the mother plant, and it's just gorgeous! White with some pink. I'll take a picture later today and post it.

I'm still a little confused about the whole Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter cactus thing and their latin names. What is this I have?

both your cactus and socks' in the first picture are really Thanksgiving Cacti.

Also nurseries sometimes wrongly use the name Christmas Cacti on Thanksgiving Cacti, so no wonder there's a lot of confusion !

Socks' plant is nice and well branched. How old is this plant, socks ? And also, is this a new hybrid or a cutting from a "heirloom plant" ? I think it has lovely and special segments ! And, what color are the flowers ?

You have Schlumbergera x truncata the Thanksgiving cactus. Looks like "White Christmas". If WC gets cool while buds are developing they will be pinkish. Thanksgiving cactus is marketed as "Christmas Cactus" because the name sells better! Virtually all CC on the market today are really TC. As Bergit says, no wonder there is so much confusion. And its all about money naturally!

Thanks to you, also. The cactus has been in my bedroom, which is about 62 degrees. So I guess you could say that the cactus got cool. Didn't know they have names other then what their color is.

- Yes , they have names , but they are mostly sold without nametags , so we don't know which hybrid we've bought.

My Thanksgiving Cacti are also budding now. It's so great to have plants coming into bloom in your house now that evenings are getting darker and leaves have started falling off the trees. One has other feelings for flowers on plants that one has nursed into bloom oneself than for those on plants "fresh from the shop / nursery" ! - At least it's like that for me. :-)

This picture was taken in April -06, when my Thanksgiving Cactus ( to the left ) and my Christmas Cactus were reblooming.

Maybe I finally find out how to place the picture directly in the posting, like the others here have done ...

I don't know the name of the S. truncata ( the Thanksgiving Cactus ). It was bought at a local supermarket in fall 2003, there was no label.

It has been such a rewarding plant, I have potted it up every spring and fertilized in summer, and it has been "doing it's thing" ; growing and flowering. It is full of buds now. - Too many buds in fact ( I started a thread on that subject in "House Plants Forum" ) !

Since I got this red one, I have bought S. truncatas in different colors ( red & white, pink, pink & white, yellow, orange, white and purplered ). So this year I won't go near the nurseries ... ;-)

These plants get big, you know !
- Can't have them taking over the house... :-)
