March Week 3 2023
Comments (58)We made it to 31 this morning. I'm about to head to the hoop house to vent it and remove the coverings because we're at 36 and it's SUNNY. If I wait too long it will be 90 in that hoop house. Funny how those things work. I brought in the tray of kale because it had a few herbs in it. They would have been fine, tho. The cabbages stayed in the hoop. I nearly forgot the calendula. It can take a light frost, I THINK. But didn't want to risk it. It's one of my focus herbs. And I have quite a bit of it. Those extra trays didn't fit on the light shelf, but they're big enough to be okay just sitting next to it. The door to that room has to be kept closed. I have 2 sister cats who love herbs--all herbs. I always say that their ancestors must have belonged to herbalists, wise women or witches. My herb cabinet is such a fascination for them. Even closed, they'll nose at it. Anyway.... I'll take the trays back to the hoop house and only bring the calendula up tonight. Tomorrow, night, the cabbages will come indoors too. How did everyone elses plants do? I hope the lows on Sunday morning don't harm those lovely plant volunteers in the burn pile. Or my red poppies. The seedlings on the light shelf really need to be potted on. (I like saying "potted on" now. There's a girl I follow on Instagram from the Isle of Man and that's what she calls potting up or up-potting.) It's a messy job and I prefer to do it outside or in the shop. Maybe after this cold spell. The tomatillos HAD to be potted on, tho, so I did those last night in the house. Okay. it's time to open the hoop house now....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/2/2023
Comments (34)G'morning! My apologies for not being around; we have been busy with 4th of July festivities. I want to take a moment to thank jill302 for her kind words in the last thread. I had mentioned that my knees were hurting and she wished me well. So, "thank you, Jill!" - it was much appreciated. As far as beauty goes, I think every single one of you is beautiful inside and out, even though I've never laid eyes on any of you! :) It's interesting that being beautiful has come up in this thread. I was sitting in a bar over the weekend having a beer when the 20something woman sitting next to me, turned and said, "you know, you are really beautiful." Let me tell you, my soon to be 65 year old self was shocked! At first, I thought she was pulling my leg in a mean spirited way, but after chatting with her for a few minutes I think she was sincere. Even if she was not, I'm going to take it that way. Over the weekend, we were at our vacation home and it was very hot. 106 on Saturday and it stayed in the triple digits the entire weekend dropping to a cool 101 by the time we headed home on Tuesday. Having moved to a much cooler climate a couple of years ago, that was a real shock to my system, but I did manage to get a walk in every day that we were there. They were much shorter than what I usually do, but at least I got out there and got moving. Food wise, I did ok. We had bbq ribs with potato salad, but the other sides were watermelon and corn. I stuck to my smaller portions and had only one rib, just a small serving of potato salad, half a cob of corn and a couple of slices of watermelon. The worst thing I ate over the weekend was a slice of pecan pie from the ice cream social held by the local church. But, the pie is a yearly tradition and I wasn't going to deprive myself of that. I didn't eat it all in one sitting; just a few bites on Tuesday, a little bit yesterday and I still have half of that slice left. I did drink more beer than usual, but we were having a good time and I'm not going to beat myself up over that. Yesterday, I was back to my regular walk and I'm about to walk two miles to the farmers market to buy peaches and strawberries. This morning, I tried on several pairs of pants that did not fit me last week, but they fit me today (and not just that I was able to button them, but they really fit) - yay! What prompted me to try them on was putting on my regular jeans this morning and noticing that they were quite loose around the waist. Loose enough that I needed a belt to hold them up. I feel like I woke up slimmer this morning; does weight loss happen over night? Anyway, I'm quite happy with how the week and weekend went. To top it all off, hubby and I had a wonderful time together so I'm in a great mood. Funky, I'll chime in that I have a friend who uses the trekking poles for hiking and walking around her neighborhood. She doesn't have vision or balance issues, but she finds that she feels much more confident using them, especially over rough terrain. Because of my bad knee, I've been think of getting a pair as well. To all of you - keep up the good work, congratulate yourself for your successes and don't get discouraged over setbacks as we start each day with a clean slate....See MoreWhat are you reading? Comments (58)Just commenting on The Marriage Portrait. I ldid like it, and while her writing is beautiful, it was for me, overload. I felt that if it could have been 1/4 shorter, I would have enjoyed it more. I absolutely loved Hamnet. faftris- thank you for suggesting the visit. I haven't been to DC in probably close to 30 years. DH suggests it every now and then and I keep finding excuses, but that does sound really interesting. I just started The Road to Bittersweet. I thought I saw it mentioned here, but apparently not. I don't know why it was on my radar. I remember whoever suggested it really raved about it. I'm hoping it gets there. I'm about 20% into it and not sure what to make of it....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of Oct 1, 2023
Comments (31)I missed a bunch of updates this week-- my apologies! Welcome back, Sue! I seem to do better with a "bigger" or normal lunch and a light dinner too. It is hard though-- I need to not only have fast stuff stocked but I also need to have the time (I have had meetings over lunch or that cut into lunch). I am making a pot of soup now for at least the first part of the week. Dinner may be an apple and pb or a salad.. or more soup. GS, wow-- nice haul there! Congrats on the toning and the lost lb! I am going pretty well on eating-- and poorly on water and exercise. I am hoping things settle down in a week or 2 so I can get into a routine. I am fairly good with routine once it is established. I was going to make a turkey sausage and zucchini soup today-- but the zucchinis had gone bad in the middle (or they were delivered that way and I didnt notice). I didn't feel like sending a new order in so I adjusted based on what I had in the pantry ... I added black beans, chopped red peppers, and dried chopped hatch chilies & spices ...to the turkey sausage, mirepoix, garlic and chopped tomatoes. I may add frozen white corn-- but not sure it is necessary. Don't you love that about soup? You can easily pivot and make something delicious with whatever you have on hand!...See Morehazelinok
