Installing a Mini-Split - hire a pro?

Hi Friends! We are converting an extra free-standing garage that is on our property to my husband's office/man cave/workout room (about 375 sq ft). It's already properly wired, with plenty power, etc. Currently it has a crappy window unit that doesn't work.

I want to install a mini-split but hubby wants to save money. I said, let's just look at the options. Got some recommendations for brands, but when I started shopping installers I am horrified! They want to charge $4 K to install and most won't just install a brand I pick. Say it's not properly warrantied and they are all putting the fear of god in me about having a non-licensed professional do it.

So I'm considering going with just a regular ol handyman to do the install... which will cost 1/5 the price. Are these AC companies just a racket!? Or, is it unwise to have a handyman install?
