Advice needed on new hvac system in NC
Comments (21)We are in the process of replacing a 1 year old...Yes,1 year old 4 ton ($12,400put in Aug.20,2011) air conditioner:TraneXL16i seer:16.5 furnace:TraneXV95 load calculation was done by 5 out of the 6 companies stating we needed a 4 ton unit. We just had a company come out and they said we are oversized by 1 ton and that was the reason for our whole problem?? We have what they call 'dirty sock' syndrome which started 2 weeks after it was installed!! 4 coil changes later still an issue. When we ran it in emergency heat over the winter, without a coil,no smell!!! With Tranes non responsiveness to all I would never get a Trane again!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I've read about all the problems with all units and am more confused then ever, but I do know that I will not get a heatpump again!!! Our original Lennox furnace(19yrsold)began getting stuck/freezing(not turning on) no smell issues whatsoever. Since we had just finished with our D.I.Y renovation of our home we decided to get a new unit, more energy efficient since it was the last thing that was needed to complete our home! I cannot believe how each and every contractor differs on their load calcs...you would think there would be some sort of protocol/procedure to do this accurately and come up with the same numbers?? More confused then ever~smile~Afraid to get that horrendous smell back in my house with another 'coil'...and Yes, we had one dipped and the procedure was done incorrectly , even the contractor said the chemical smell was making him ill...it was in the house for 1 hour and he had to take it out immediately after closing up the unit(took him an hour to install it). We had to air out the house mid winter and sit outside...stress to say the least....Any comments advice would be appreciated~smile~ I too live in W.N.C....See MoreIs this new HVAC system a good deal?
Comments (2)so you have to install ductwork & upgrade electrical to install hvac system (s)? what type heating cooling is in place now? have you gotten other bids? I'd always get several bids. different contractors will have different ideas of how to install ducts & equipment. shop around a bit more. its a big investment that will effect your comfort & affordability for a long time/ best of luck....See MoreQuestion about thermostat needed for new HVAC system
Comments (2)You want a Trane XL824 thermostat that controls furnace staging based on demand, not the low end and wrong thermostat. Why cripple a nice system? IMO...See Moreneed help in replacing hvac system
Comments (12)You as a professional know how to compare system A to system B and determine if the extra cost is justified or not. Most homeowners don't have the knowledge to do this. I think lifetime heat exchanger warranties are becoming more common. In my opinion most heat exchangers fail due to over sized furnaces and undersized duct work. The warranty does not cover labor charges which makes the warranty almost useless. In most cases it makes more sense to put the money towards a new furnace. I think a 99 year compressor warranty is a marketing gimmick. It may be useful if the compressor fails in the eleventh year and then again you have to pay for labor. But if fails in 15-20 years, how many people are going to sink money into an old Goodman condenser? My neighbor and I were shopping for new HVACs systems at the same time several years ago. A third neighbor highly recommended the Carrier dealer she used. The neighbor who was shopping rejected him because is price was very high. I rejected him not just on price, but the system he was recommending made no sense, and his load calculation consisted of walking around the house and checking off boxes on a piece of paper. The quote itself consisted of scribbling numbers on a blank sheet of paper and then subtracting discounts and rebates. The whole thing was very unprofessional, yet if I ask the neighbor who used them she would recommend them again. Shopping for HVAC systems is hard. You don't know the ability and honesty of the contractor until the system is installed....See Moresktn77a
