Need help updating the front of our house
Comments (17)If you do decide to add shutters back to the double window, you do have room to make them the right size so they appear functional even if they aren't functional. The shutters on the double windows need to be much, much wider than what you had before. Here are two brief articles about the wrong and right size shutters so you can see why it makes a big difference on how your house appears - either finished or off. Adding hardware to the right sized shutters helps too. https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/ https://thecraftsmanblog.com/why-fake-shutters-make-me-angry/ In the examples below you see very wide shutters that appear to cover the windows. Notice the shutters are only on the windows where they look like they fit and not on the windows where there isn't enough room. The house is balanced. You don't need shutters on every window when they are decorative shutters. IMO placing too small decorative shutters on your windows only enhances the feeling that something is wrong with the house curb appeal. Your mind's eye see's the disconnect even if you don't recognize what it is that is throwing the balance off. Your original question asked about dark brown cedar on the bottom half of your house. I don't think that will enhance your home at all. I do think changing the shutters to the right size and changing the walkway to be wider and more welcoming will be a big help. Landscaping changes as mentioned are critical to improving the front. I like the idea of a proper portico like littlebug shows in her second example OR the big change that suezbell mentioned across the front (shed roof). But those changes are personal preference for you and not required at all IMO....See MoreFront of House update
Comments (10)Would not enclose the sides of the porch. Knowing what style door you want would help. Are you interested in a door with wood finish instead of a painted door? You might consider removing the entire porch roof and pillars -- but leave the forward facing gable over the upstairs window -- to create a new porch roof just below upstairs window, then make your new porch posts compliment your door -- perhaps an all wood look for both. Another option might be to use the same wood look you use for your door and porch posts for your upstairs shutters -- or remove the shutters altogether (rather than replacing them) and add wider wood framing around your upstairs windows -- white or the same wood look as your new door. Perhaps you could saw off and clad the posts you have to do this....See MoreHelp, front of house needs updating!
Comments (6)Think about adding shutters to the upstairs windows. Replace the front door with a glass door (maybe reed glass) to go with the glass panels on either side. Windows on the garage doors would also help. The visual weight is on the garage doors, so that’s the first thing you notice on the house. To keep it balanced you need to use three colors on the house . Front door and Shutters the darkest shade.Eaves and window trim lightest colors. The body of the house mid-value. Many paint companies, like Sherwin Williams will have color specialist to help you .Add outdoor lanterns for lighting ,in the 3 spaces by the garage doors....See Morefront of house update this!
Comments (6)Landscaping, or large potted plants since this looks like pavement, would be easy initially and go a long way. If you want want to go beyond that..., to my eye, I would want to bring more focus to entry door to balance the weight , prominence, of the garage. Since everything looks to be the same grade, a porch won't work(?). How about an awning over the door with a simple shape. I'd stick with same color monotone. if the awning has color I think it might look just "stuck on" and not integrated. someone with computer talents could photoshop one on and play with sizing. and color for that matter. still put some plants around near the door. Awning is functional too! Many types and prices, probably you could do something starting around $750, lessthan a thousand for modest but sturdy. I put the "back" of my manufactured house toward the street and adding an awning over the door. Made it look a little more like the "front". (note to Houzzers, LOVE my "trailer ", I don't need to hear any trolling on that topic, and it's paid for.)....See Morececily 7A
