Quartzite polished or honed?
Comments (60)kksmama, Taj Mahal is one of the most trouble-free stones that you can get, so they've made an excellent choice. It's not porous so it's unlikely to stain - and that's the worry with other quartzites. As for hot pans, the trouble isn't because the minerals in the stone can't handle heat, it's because all slabs are relatively thin, and the 'thermal shock' of a hot pan can cause the stone to expand, but just in that one small spot. The stress over the small area can create a crack. It's unlikely - but not impossible. A couple years ago I did lots of tests putting a smoking-hot cast iron skillet on various slabs and none of the 2 cm slabs cracked. But a thinner one did - it was quartz though, not natural stone. Nonetheless, even with Taj Mahal I would use trivets. I'm so glad your stone is working out for you and I know exactly what you mean about the satisfaction of having done your homework. Comments (100)Sandy - hello! I’m so nervous as I’m about to apply the more anti etch to my beautiful piece of book matched panda marble on a an 11 foot island. Thank you for sharing as your post has given me more piece of mind! I’ve always lived on my Italian honed marble countertops and enjoyed the patina; however this new home build / project, I wanted a modern design and this panda does the trick. I’ve never used panda and do not know how it holds up plus I don’t want the patina look unless I just have to - hence I’m jumping in and trying MORE. My applicator just sanded it down on Friday and let me know today that the shipment of sealer has not arrived yet. Oops. So here I am surfing for more reviews to make sure it’s what we want to do. I can easily have her hone it at this point since she has sanded off the polish. The panda has crystals and sparkles and this will be toned down I think with the MORE product; however I think it’s worth it as the design is so elaborate, and we will be able to enjoy it and live life on it. Questions for you due to some negative reviews: scratching. I’ve read some reviews that it scratches easily. My applicator says it scratches the same as marble. What is your experience with this? Do you feel it scratches more than normal or what is to be expected ? someone said theirs turned yellow. How long have you had yours ? My applicator said it can turn yellow but only if in direct sunlight all day. She is not at all worried about this for my kitchen Honed - I don’t like the high shine and look forward to seeing the honed finish as a starting point at polish time. Glad you like the finished look of MORE honed. do you still like to touch the countertop even with the MORE on it? I love tapping my fingernails on the marble and hope it still has the stone feel. Does it ? mine is a waterfall and my last concern is where the two areas meet - the sides will not be treated with MORE of course. She said it will look fine. my applicator said the near thing about MORE is that it follows the lines of the veins and fits and molds to the stone. Your post has made me feel so much better! Please comment on my concerns if you see this. I haven’t found many reviews on MORE and have been a bit nervous. Im sure many who love it probably don’t say anything. The positive is not often discussed - only the negative. Thank you ! Stephanie...See MoreHardest Non Porous White-Grey Quartzites?
Comments (35)I didnt pick out the paint color for the master bath, only the master bedroom. The floor tile is in the picture at the bottom, light in color. CP I feel so bad for your sister and completely understand why she feels the way she does. I put the sample in water, it absorbed it quickly and lemon did etch BUT it also scratched glass easily. The etching left behind was smooth. Kim yikes on the price! My slab is 84/sq ft. Jan I am utilizing the slab for the laundry, master and guest bath because I do not want to waste it and you have to buy the slab. I really liked this slab but may go look for something else at another yard. I appreciate everyone's help and suggestions and am planning on speaking to my fabricator. I knew there were lots of quartzites out there and some are harder than others and some etch and some stain. Am thankful for people posting to let me know how their quartzites are holding up. I love the fusion quartzites but bet they are expensive. I am kind of bored with granite. The quartzites are so beautiful and have that wow factor....See MoreQuartzite countertop: do faucet holes need to be sealed?
Comments (11)It is very smart that you are vetting the fabricators. Definitely seal the inside of all holes. A true quartzite will not etch but some are more porous and benefit from sealing. If you do a search above on 'quartzite staining' you will pull up numerous threads from posters that have had issues. Our quartzite was installed two years ago. We have two sinks each with three holes. One soap dispenser hole was accidentally not sealed and it developed a shadow around the hole about a month after installation. We removed the pump head immediately and when it dried out our fabricator came back and sealed the inside of the hole. Since then we have had no problems. Before choosing a stone I would read karin_mt's threads on here and the helpful articles that she has written. I would follow her recommendation and test the stone that you plan to purchase. In the tests that I did at home some samples that were marked as quartzite failed miserably with etching and staining. https://usenaturalstone.org/properties-of-quartzite/?utm_source=related-articles/ https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2438427/countertop-geology-part-5-marble-quartzite-and-other-favorites#n=165...See More- 7 months ago
