What to do with eight 6-month old oak saplings
Comments (14)i have no problem deferring on z6 planting times .... but that was not my real point .... i am picturing this tree.. smaller than a pencil ... and how you protect them in 8 separate locations around the garden .... my point was .. all grouped together.. protection is easy .... and then there is the winter dryness ... if applicable... can you keep these SIX INCH BABES properly watered all winter long???? ... or would they be better protected otherwise .... are you z6'ers ... suggesting that a 6 month old.. 6 inch tree.. is equivalent to a pot grown or ball and burlap.. tree of say 3 to 5 years old .... 3 to 5 feet tall ... ???? though i usually lecture peeps that plants are not their babies ... in this case.. THESE ARE LITERALLY BABIES ... and i will stick to protecting them .. this winter ... if you plant .. get rid of any media.. bare root and plant in native soil .... do you have snow cover all winter????? good luck ken ps: best solution.. experiment .... plant 4 .. store 4 .... see what happens .......See MoreLegs legs legs
Comments (8)Ok, I figured out my legs today- thanks everyone for the input! All legs, no columns and varying styles and sizes. Lindamarie- thanks for the feedback on layout. What you describe is actually my current layout :-) It's functional, but I dont like it for several reasons - not the least of which is it makes the non-recessed 22 year old fridge the focal point of my kitchen since my kitchen opens up to the FR on the other end. In the new layout the fridge is a little odd tucked away in the wall where its a row of doors today but it allows me to have a flush full size fridge, almost double the over the sink window size, and make a focal point of the range. It's a trade off. The W/D is a huge PITA. They will be stacked behind cabinet doors (today they are in kitchen not stacked behind two regular doors). If I had anywhere else to put them, I would. But I dont. We fully finished the basement with a too-small storage room that is packed, and there is just no where else to go. I've even considered putting them in my master bedroom closet! So it's not ideal but I'm sort of stuck with it. My friend and neighbor has my exact house and she just redid everything in this exact layout (totally different style) so at I have been able to preview what I am going to end up with, which is a big advantage and possible the only advvantage to cookie cutter homes! But again, I agree your layout and my current one is probably better with landing spaces etc, but with my FR the way is it, I wanted to change it up....See MoreAnnie turned EIGHT last week *pics*
Comments (21)Hi Danielle and Jason, When I saw Annie's attractive pics ... ... I thought that perhaps I'd made a mistake, when I visited. I should have asked to have paid a visit to your sleeping young ones ... to have more or less met them (even though it'd have been a one-way street, they being unaware). Would they have felt more or less betrayed ... ... to have been visited, in the privacy of their bedroom, with them unaware, defenceless ... by some ... stranger? But they could trust that, with Mom and Dad there ... they were safe. In at least 99 out of 100 instances, I think, even if Mom and Dad weren't there ... they'd still be safe. It seems to me that most folks are decent, trustworthy ... ... it's the others that we hear so much about. Put a small dot with a pencil in the middle of a sheet of typewriter(?) paper ... ... ask someone what s/he sees - s/he'll say, "A dot". Not mentioning all of the wide expanse of paper that carries no mark. I hope that you have a lovely, late summer weekend in that lovely province: though I spent only 7 years there ... it took hold of my heart. ole joyful...See MoreWhat beetle? Comments (5)Thank you very much for your excellent response. That's it. Not surprisingly (and unfortunately), there is milkweed in that garden. I was unable to tend to it for a long while and the spurge and milkweed took hold and have been tough to eradicate. Last fall while attempting pulling out the spurge, I got some of the caustic spurge sap in my eye and had to get my eyes irrigated. Very painful. There were very thick fleshy roots. The genus of that imported beetle being tested on leafy and cypress spurge is Aphthona. I don't believe any are in my spurge areas or that the beetle has been all that reliable....See MoreJilly
