You do not need to stack two 2cm slabs on top of each other to make it look like you are using 4cm thick slabs. You only need a small amount of extra material (1-2â inches depending on edge type) to beef up just the outside edges of the counters. Laminated or mitered edges are very common here in So. Cal., where most stone and quartz is sold in 2cm size, rather than 3cm. The fabricator will put a 5/8â thick plywood subtop that is a little narrower than the finished counter size on top of the cabinet. Then the 2cm slab counter is put on top of the plywood. A narrow strip of the quartz is attached just at the edge of the counter to hide the edge of the plywood and make the whole counter look thicker. For standard 24â deep cabinets, the finished counter width with overhang is typically 25.5.â I donâÂÂt know what brand of quartz you plan to buy, but Caesarstone slabs are 56.5â wide, Hanstone is 55â wide, Silestone is 54âÂÂ, Cambria is 55.â (Some brands sell wider âÂÂjumboâ slabs if you have deeper counters.) Assuming a 55â wide slab, two 25.5â deep counters will use up 51â (plus a small amount of loss in the cutting process), leaving the few inches you need for the edge strips. You should need the same number of slabs whether you use 2cm or 3cm material. The thinner material will cost less, which should offset the increased labor cost for the laminated or mitered edge. I am going to try to attach pictures that show the different types of edges.

I just had the same thing happen to me with Della Terra Vittoria White quartz from AZ Tile. Manufactured by santamargarita. I am sick over the result. If I had known it could vary this much I would have tried to get a dyelot # from our bathroom counter install just a few months prior. (Or chosen something else!) I thought since we had our sample (and one full counter installed that matched said sample) that we knew what this would look like. I am really disappointed. Our bathroom counter is a true white with beautiful veining and depth variation if you look closely. The kitchen counter slabs have sparse veining and have an overall grey, almost rosy undertone. It looks like a mottled pattern with some veining instead of a veined counter with some mottling. And they are an entirely different shade. The kitchen counters wash out against our wall and backsplash and almost have a pink hue when viewed next to the white cabinets. If it's a known quantity that there is this little consistency, they should be required to provide a sample from the dye lot you are purchasing. And insist that customers preview the slabs before finalizing the sale. I like everyone else was told that quartz was consistent and that was unnecessary. I pulled the trigger on this remodel because I wanted to love it. It's not reasonable to expect customers to be expert enough to head this off.

I am a small fabricator who specializes in high end quality and cutting edge design in the central Florida area. Cambria is a no brainer for my clients who want really special engineered stone surfaces. With that being said, this price increase is very true. My cost has gone up 30% for Cambria. While I will still continue to offer Cambria products in my showroom, I will say that the price increase has caused three of my clients to either choose another product or simply find another fabricator all together. in either case, Cambria has lost three sales in January alone out of my little store. One of those sales I lost all together, but the other two chose another brand. As one user above has posted, time will tell if this price increase impacts Cambria's total sales/profit and ultimately gets their attention to address the pricing structure. I love Cambria, but I am not sure I will sell as many Cambria jobs as I did before the price increase.

There are several other brands of similar materials. The main ones that have had a few other discussions on this board come from Stone Peak, MSI and ThinSlab. While Neolith/Dekton generate the most discussion, I would definitely check out the other products, especially if you are after a particular finish. I agree that the edge profile would be a problem with a obviously veined countertop. But an all white countertop or even one with faint, thin veining should not be a problem at all with a thin profile edge. The main body color matches, and there is very little to see beyond that on a thin edge. I would imagine that the NYC area has a lot of Neolith installs, so you should be able to find an experienced installer. If you contact Neolith, they would direct you to their recommended installers. Pricing reports on this forum have varied quite a bit. Some people find it insanely high priced in their region, others find it quite a bargain. There is no way to know until you start pricing it out locally. You may also try asking the question directly in the Kitchens forum, as I don't recall if any of the previous posters who have discussed pricing have been from the NYC area. All that being said, should you strike out with this material, I know that other stones do come in thin versions, it is just about what is available locally for you. Polycor, in particular, makes and heavily markets their granites and marbles in 1cm slabs.
