Good morning Barbara, I hope you are not a state worker...lol No special treatment for all my Picea glauca's. I don't know why yours would burn...nothing any hotter then Kansas in July and August and mine suffer no burn problems in full sin. Maybe you have some other underlying issues that are causing them to appear to have burn issues. Young and tender plants I do protect for at least a year and then plant in a permanent location. 'Rainbow's End' new flush will suffer burn if not offered some protection till it acclimates. The 'Pendula' has no special growing needs. A beautiful cultivar. I have two of them. A great focal point conifer. When it is hot I hose them down regularly two to three times a week along with all the other cultivars. Aside from the needed cool down this will flush out the dreaded spider mites that some of us have issues with. I have never suffered any damage from these insects and I believe the regular hose down keeps me free of them. Thanks for your positive comment about my garden. Dave

Hello all, 5 weeks later this is how things are doing. just a general view of the main part. and the aceratum (just kidding. 6-7 acers doesn't make an aceratum but it's fun thinking of it like that) 'Garnet', 'Katsura', 'Arakawa', 'Jerre Schwartz', 'Autumn Moon', 'Viridis', 'Orange Dream', Atropurpureum' close view of some new adittions under the shade of Cedrus libani (Acer palmatum 'Deshojo', Juniperus squamata 'Holger', Picea glauca 'Sander's Blue' Is this squamata 'Holger'??? and when I thought I decided on to what is the best color on a conifer, here came Abies nordmanianna 'Golden Spreader' with the almost "neon" shining colors to make me think again... 'Skylands' and it's brother Picea orientalis 'Early Gold' which I don't think it so 'early' given the fact that it is the latest bloomer I have along with my Sequoiadendron giganteum... Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Smaragd' on the path entrance. Pinus mugo 'Wintergold' with a pollen cone. and to finish with the yellow ones, one of my favorite Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Uwe's Golden' 'Rainbow's End'. Not much of a show this year, hoping for more next year or so... Abies koreana 'Kohout's Ice Breaker' along with Picea glauca 'Liliput' Abies koreana 'Bonsai Blue'. Lost some color over the winter. Abies lasiocarpa 'Compacta'. Lost a branch but overall seems vigorous. Pinus mugo 'Mughus' showing great variations... Picea pungens 'Glauca Globosa' with it's bigger brother 'Hoopsi' and last, one of my blooming rododendrons with Taxus baccata 'David' and Cedrus libani ssp atlantica 'Glauca' in the background. The 'Mini Mounds' is probably invigorated by rootstock. Welch/Haddow note it was listed by Raraflora nursery, PA in 1991. Maybe they originated it and have the parent plant. Other pine may have burned on east side due to that being where the sun first hit it in the morning.

strobus pendula grows 12 to 16 inches per year .... you can mail order one for $25 ... and stake it to 8 feet in less than 4 years or so ... i dont know why you would consider paying a lot of money for a big one .... its NOT prime conifer shipping time in the heat of summer.. but visit the link to see whats available ... there are many other GOOD mail order places .... another CO'er this spring ordered a bunch from forest farm and raved .... late sept/oct is time to plant.. you have plenty of time to plan ... no long term memory here.. lol .. must have been some other recent post about shade .... oh i recall that pungens post with the yellow new buds ... whatever ... most conifers prefer dry feet... if you are watering that compressa so often.. as i thought.. you have a soil problem ... it shouldnt be draining that fast ... and the conifer probably would NOT care all that much after 3 years.. you have a greater chance of killing it.. after 3 years.. with too much water.. rather than not enough .. be careful ... or go in there with a hand trowel.. and see whats going on under there .... it is NOT the plant sucking the soil dry .... anyway .... think smaller plants.. and mail order.. to get really exclusive unique stuff .... ken Here is a link that might be useful: links
