Demo TODAY! Excited and nervous

Wish me luck! Our kitchen is empty and mudroom protected in case it gets dusty. Our kitchen got a mini renovation in 2003 by previous owners but hasn’t been truky renovated since 1980 - cue arched cabinets and faux bay window. There is another wall of cabinets on the other side of the island.

I am so grateful to the many Houzzers who have been so generous with their time and expertise!

Good luck! It‘ll be great in the end. The one thing I’ll say is expect much more dust and expect it all over the house. In addition to my contractor’s plastic tarps, I added a tension shower bar with cheap clear shower curtain at doorways. It really is surprising how far the dust reaches and I had a small reno.

I would also get an aircleaner for your bedroom and plan on changing hvac filters at least twice by the time you are done. Good luck

Yea, I'm looking forward to tasting the Biker's. I wasn't going to grow Jalapenos at all, but figured I would give them a try. Looks like everything but the Choc 7-Pot and the Peri-Peri has started growing. Nothing noteworthy enough to post yet, but they all are starting to pop out of the seed a little bit, including the Bhut. And only in 3 days!

We started in earnest on Saturday, taking two walls partially down. Gutted, it already looks better with the 360 views out our windows. In addition to crawling over boxes and cloaked furniture everywhere, yesterday's tear out involved our soffits and ceiling - tons of insulation floating all over the house despite sheeting. DH fell through a part of our ceiling, popping a hole in a section we weren't expecting to resurface...actually very funny since no one got hurt. No surprises (like the reading material and refreshments found by some :), other than a dormant wasp hive. We are down to bare bones now...a nice 30 degree breeze wafted through the house last night. Electrician arrives today. Despite the mess, this part is actually fun. DH is our contractor's 'helper' ... They seem to work well together (other than the ceiling mishap!). Good luck to all the other demos going on this week. Will post pictures soon.

Well, a bit more progress to show. I was out of town for part of last week, but while I was gone they removed most of the siding from the back of the house where the kitchen addition will be and removed the screen porch. Since then they have also removed most of the siding around the upstairs slider that will be replaced with windows. Hopefully our permits will be returned this week and we'll have a foundation hole and the slab from the screen porch will be cut back to make room for the addition (the first 3' of it are in the way).

The day has come and gone and installation finished late this afternoon. I wanted to check-in with the outcome. The guys were very nice -- which made it harder. I stayed out of the way mostly but could see problems. I'm happy with the marble itself but the craftsmanship is not there. Does anyone ever have a satisfactory install? I felt so sick after they left that I could not do a thorough inspection. I'll do it in the morning in natural light. One of the guys started applying epoxy as soon as they plopped the island down. I heeded advice and was nearby sitting on the stairs but not too close so they could do their job. They did not offer any info on what was going on. When they were done I asked about that spot (as no one offered any info about it) and asked if they chipped it during the install and he said, no, it was done during fabrication. So I have at least one chip, a problematic seam with a chip, an out of square island, and an out of square sink reveal. So weary from this DIY and so hoped this would go well. Very depressed right now. I'll start a new thread tomorrow with the details. I'll definitely need guidance.

Good luck...there will be a day when the dust has settled, and is eventually gone! Plastic zipper doors work well.

Wonderful!! I am excited for you!! Post pictures with your new kitchen, when completed. I had my kitchen renovated a few years ago; I was lucky to have worked from home. I am a cleaning nut. Every evening after my carpenter left, I also cleaned the area. My husband and carpenter thought I was crazy. I am!! I think all my cleaning helped out in the long run. Also, after we inspected our new gas range and dishwasher; I covered them up really well till they were installed; I recommend you do this too! It cuts down on cleaning new appliances (we kept our fridge as it was a few years old). Also, you must keep your sense of humor alive, and pray to God daily, to get you through it!!
