Decorating 13 Year Old Boys Surfer Style Bedroom

I need some help with decorating my sons bedroom. I want to keep all of the existing furniture and the layout. I am looking to get new bedding, wall decor, lamps, area rug, and a desk chair. My son really would like a surfing themed room. Let me know what you think would look good in this space. FYI I do not want to paint the bedroom

Take the mirror off the dresser and hang a surf board there. The rest let him choose what he wants it is his space and I always stress this to parents it is not your space but the childs. Our oldest son painted Dark Side of the Moon album cover on one wall he also painted the 5 coats of paint it took to cover it when we sold . In the time he had it he loved it .

we have not attached it yet--- we need to look at the bed frame to see if its able to attach -otherwise we will get the appropriate frame- DH does not want to attach to wall-- its pretty sturdy even though its not attached.... HTN-- i hear you about transitional-- i kind of felt like i was liking that style but yes the rest of our house is traditional-- i'm keeping the headboard- so i'll see what else i come up with... I also think the bed needs an ivory throw blanket and a nice bench (thats lighter by the foot of the bed)... to be continued

Lots of good ideas here. Thanks! Joann - thanks for the picture. That is what I was envisioning, but I like having an example. I never considered green as the main wall color, but I like the idea. I'll have to find a subtle green though. I don't want the color to be too loud. I love the image of the stripes provided by dawnp. That is very do-able for me. I will involve my son in the selection, after I've narrowed down the choices. He picked the bedding, but has told me that he wants rainbow walls (not gonna happen!). I think he'll like the stripes in the example from dawnp. Maybe I can find some nice tans and greens for the colors. Les - we originally had the furniture as you suggested, but when you entered the room the edge of the chest made it feel blocked. But I do like the idea of creating a space in the corner for activities. Once we paint I'll play with the furniture arrangement again. Maybe it would be better if I placed the chest against the wall to the left of the table, rather than on an angle. What do you think? I'm on the hunt for a small book shelf. I'll also look at removable decals that would be fun for the next few years, but can be removed as he gets older. I'll look at shagreen once I find my samples. Thanks bestyears. This is why I love this forum! I've been looking at his room for a year now without any direction. Now I have it! Thank you everyone. I'll keep checking back in case anyone else has further ideas or opinions.

@Olychick- I tried it over there but bc the desk is higher than the other nightstand , it looked weird to have the higher piece closer to the door Where you walk in and the lower piece farther away...so I switched it . Its a small room so I feel like the desk should go back to its original position. High Shelves in place of the desk will put way too much furniture in a small room . But honestly - design isnt my thing

One thing to note about your inspo photos is neither have wood floors and you do - so I am not sure I would add another wood tone to the walls but that's personal preference. I like the Hale Navy but it's dark - maybe khaki walls and big lush navy rug? I think a nice cozy chair and ottoman with a floor lamp in the corner would be nice - a bamboo shade rather than the cellular one would warm up the room with some texture. I agree with @arcy_gw it would be good chat with your son about what he wants - my teen wanted a huge magnetic white board for photos, quotes etc.. so we did that on one wall of his room and he loves it

How about a wobble stool instead of a desk chair? You can find them in many colors but quality matters

I know a couple of pro surfers. Their homes are laid back, for sure.

Go light on the theme and heavy on the actual surf stuff - Endless Summer, Mexican blankets, and surf stickers. Let him choose a lot of the stuff. You've got a teenage guy who will soon not want him mom decorating his room and he is old enough to make it his own.

1. You don't get more surfer dude than the iconic image from the movie poster of Endless Summer. Get a huge print of the poster to hang above the dresser. (Put the mirror in storage and put a mirror on the back of the door.) Use colors from the poster, or colors that go well with the poster, for sheets and pillow cases, get a Mexican blanket for the bed. Get a sand colored rug to swap out for the current rug.

2. Let him pick out actual surf board stickers (Sex Wax, Hurley, some skater stickers too cause I spy a skate board.) Place command strips on the back of the stickers and let him put them wherever he wants on the walls, on his furniture.

3. Get cheap lamps from Ikea, whatever color he likes.

You are off to a great start with the rug and quilt. I think the wall color and furniture are great as is. I would do a surfboard over the bed and add in surf prints, new surf bedding, etc. Amazon seems to have a lot of teen surf stuff. Do a search for surf teen bedding and surf decor. There is a lot that match the blue you already have. Pottery barn and Etsy are another great source for surf decor. Pottery barn usually has more but I think that might be a summer stock.

I think the room is a bit of a yawn : ) heavy, dark

Start with a more grown up but colorful and yet inexpensive theme as it will be outgrown.

On two different rugs below. Circles and waves.

I find the navy stripe more obviously suggestive of overdone nautical. A little tension in color would be good.

I didn't bother with links - screen shot and a google will get you there.:

PS........find another home for the high boy if you can -it is choking the light and air and space. No matter the theme or decor.
