Comments (10)I posted an answer and it got lost...sigh...just home from working at DS1's restaurant. OK the bread looks great. I use my homemade granola so that may be a factor in the color of the internal loaf. No don't increase the granola. I think I suggested spraying your hands with PAM as you work it. That makes all the difference since you don't want to add too much flour. Also rise it slowly and not at too hot a temp. But make sure it is almost double. The wet doughs and the sweet doughs are completely different , each and of themselves, from the regular doughs like the Challah. It takes time...and you know...we all have that....time. I can't tell you all what a difference this forum has made in my personal life , this holiday. Thank you all. Comments (141)Sue, I'm not sure who you are asking, but I can give a few reasons why I like the Thanksgiving get together so much. For one thing, it isn't preceded by trying to figure out what presents to buy. I love buying things for my children & grandchildren "on-the-fly," all throughout the year. But birthdays and Christmas are more difficult for me simply because gifts are expected. So it requires a lot more thought and planning. Secondly, I love the decor of Thanksgiving. The cornucopia filled with gourds, dried ears of corn, Autumn leaves, etc. I get out my Pilgrim and turkey candles and my husband and I "argue" about lighting them up when the family arrives. It's an ongoing joke that has now become tradition. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, but I love the few hymns specifically associated with Thanksgiving. So I enjoy banging out "Come, ye thankful people, come" on my piano and singing along. Or maybe I should say, croaking along. I really like the fact that Thanksgiving isn't as commercialized as Christmas. There's no "Thanksgiving" music blaring in every store. Very few, if any, TV specials. There isn't a 3 month prelude of Thanksgiving stuff -- activities, music, media, etc. It's still a rather simple holiday. Also, I honestly do like the meal, even though ours is never as elaborate as many other forum members. And I really like the turkey scrapple I make with the carcass. Comments (19)DH's family dinner Christmas Eve went well, food-wise; one SIL brought the nibbles (rockmelon cubes wrapped in prosciutto, watermelon chunks, quiche, and little moneybag dumpling puff pastry balls filled with some kind of sausagemeat); other SIL roasted a turkey breast and one leg for those who liked dark meat, with sausagemeat stuffing, bread sauce, gravy (MIL made it, it's OK but thinner than I like it, more like jus), fresh brussels sprouts (so much nicer than the usual frozen ones but always a risk as I have found at this time of year they can be very buggy), carrots and roasted potatoes; I brought a whole glazed ham with Glenda_al's Spiced pineapple pickups, and the desserts- lime tart, coffee cheesecake topped with pecan praline and brownies. MIL made her usual trifle which I love and don't get to eat at home as no one else here cares for it (I got leftovers :-) ). SIL who did the nibblies puzzlingly brought a panettone for dessert as well (she had asked if I needed help with desserts and I declined with thanks) but I was glad as I love panettone and in the divvying up the leftovers phase I got some o bring home :-) I took a bunch of plastic take away containers to assist with the divvying up which worked well :-) Christmas Day it was just DH, DD, DSIL and moi at home. We had a big breakfast of bacon and really good smoked bacon after church in the morning that kept us going with snacks until a big early dinner. We had roast turkey with bread stuffing in the main cavity and sausagemeat stuffing in the neck cavity (SIL had never had it before and really liked it), hasselback potaotes, roasted asparagus, roasted sweet potato, herb bread, gravy, bread sauce, and pumpkin pie (DD's favourite) for dessert. I sent a lot of leftovers away with the kids yesterday along with a big containers of Christmas cookies when they went to a family picnic with DSIL's Dad and siblings. Apparently they traditionally take leftovers and I was very glad to be able to supply some :-) Also produced some disposable plastic platters and champagne flutes- the convenience of hoarding stuff "just in case" :-D ! Had a lovely text from DD thanking me for their stay and the "yummy food", which from her is a huge compliment, and said the cookies were a big hit at the picnic. Both SIL's turkey carcase and mine have been turned into stock (I used SIL's on Christmas Day for our gravy as our turkey had no neck!!) and about a third of the ham resides in all its glory in the fridge :-)...See MoreHow did it go?
Comments (39)Rob, it sounds perfect! Mother is here with me and that went well too, for which I am thankful. If it is her last year, at least it was a great one. If she's still with you next year, well, you set the bar high! Jasdip, I hope you're feeling better soon and can still recuperate enough to at least enjoy some of your time off! We just had our dinner yesterday, there were 11 of us with Mother there. I high-heat roasted a tenderloin, using Barbara Kafka's method ala AnnT and served it with horseradish sauce. We also had a ham glazed with pineapple and brown sugar, twice baked potatoes, sweet potatoes stuffed with Italian sausage and gruyere, Sol's honey rolls, creamed corn. macaroni and cheese at the request of The Princess, cranberry/raspberry relish, broccoli with cheese sauce because it's Mother's favorite. Dessert was cookies and fudge, cherry crunch pie, apple pie and cheesecake. We had "appetizers" too, a cheese ball with crackers, deviled eggs, a relish tray with pickles and olives, a tray of cheese and Elery's homemade venison sausage. After that we opened gifts. Maci refused to eat anything other than fudge, Ashley came with her two German Shepherds and Amanda brought her Golden Retriever. Bud flew his drone around the house causing the dogs to bark and chase each other. Ashley played pranks on Grandma (my Mother) which resulted in her getting spanked by an 84 year old, which was extremely entertaining (for me!) Kevin had worked all day and tried to not fall asleep on the couch. You know, the usual. A pile of tenderloin, right off the slicer: Cookies and fudge: Apple pie: Next up, brunch with Elery's family on January 2, which also happens to be Elery's birthday, so that should be fun. They are coming here, and I'm cooking that 2nd tenderloin and "brunch stuff", still to be determined. We'll be eating at about 10 am and there will be 5 children, 14 and under, 12 of us if Mother is still here at my house then. Annie...See Moreplllog
