Can you talk to me about hospice?

I have a good friend who is in the trenches of elderly care with her 87 yo Dad. Right now he's in an acute rehab facility because he's not bouncing back well after a recent back surgery. He's in tremendous pain and miserable. He was in his home before this but struggling there as well.

I know that people usually enter hospice when their death is expected soon but I've also heard that it can be more of a "no more heroic measures, we're just going to make you comfortable" experience.

Am I correct? If so, do you think there is a way of suggesting this diplomatically? Or should I just listen and keep my mouth shut? There is a stepmother involved and the family dynamics are not great.
