Rusty, I was in the 10th grade in the late 60's before I ever had pizza. Mama took us by this new restaurant in Dothan, AL. That was the first Italian anything I had ever had. ( Never had Mexican either).

So funny as we grew up with pizza.... actually "Apizza" (abheetz). We were catholic and had meatless fridays...pizza was us kids' favorite meatless meal! And when we had it, we had it plain with just grated cheese. The other popular choice was with scamorza (scamotz). Never mozzarella. I guess it was part and parcel of living not that far from NYC and New Haven.

Vegetables only came out of cans.

My mother was eating yogurt in Jersey City in the 50s. My sisters and I were discussing that recently. We have no idea where she could possibly have gotten it. But pizza--we had great pizza and you could buy it buy the slice.
