Air Duct Cleaning Disaster

last modified: 3 years ago

We've never had our air ducts cleaned since building 22 years ago. We had our indoor air tested by an environmentalist in June, and although air was fine, he recommended the cleaning -- and by a specific company. These people don't just attach a vacuum and pull out what they can; they use a sort of cat-o-nine-tails to scour the insides, then suck out the dirt.

The recommended small company charged $1200 per furnace. We have two, but could have had one with zones. The house is 2900 sq ft. The owner said it would take eight hours, starting at 7 a.m., but agreed to send two crews for half the time.

Day before...no contact. I called. OK, he couldn't send two crews, but would send three men and be out by noon. I suggested re-scheduling, but he didn't want to lose the day's work. OK.

Two young men and what looked like a teenager arrived on time and were ready to leave at 11:30. DH and I had stayed out of the way on our screened porch, so didn't understand when the crew boss said they'd 'cleaned up as best they could'.

They were in the truck and gone when we walked into the house. There were mounds of dirt and old bits of construction materials around every supply vent in the house and a layer of silt on every surface in the house. Each of our MBR closets has a vent, so even our clothes were covered in this material. It was on our beds, tables, lamps, upholstery -- everything! The contract siad to notify the owner by email, which we did. He didn't reply for two days, then refused to take responsibility. He wanted to send the same guys back to clean. Uh, no? He finally agreed to pay for cleaners -- difficult to find any around the Fourth. I finally found people who could clean July 11 and told the duct cleaning owner the rate was $80 per cleaner per hour. They'd send three women. It would take 2 - 3 hours. We paid $720 + tip.

They came, did a very good job, and our scratchy throats were gone the next day. One of the cleaners helped me email photos of the mess requested by the duct company owner.

I disputed the duct cleaning charge with Amex, anticipating a fight over the cleaning bill. (I've since authorized payment of $1680.)

You've guessed by now, right? He refuses to pay for the cleaning. Now, a month later, he's mailed us a check for $400 -- 'final payment, blah, blah'.

We aren't asking reimbursement to replace two furnace filters @ $40, nor our own work to make the house habitable until cleaners could come.

Amex can take 90 days to settle a dispute.

I want to return his check.
