Hello! Directly around the firebox and on the upper face are custom steel panels made by our sheetmetal guys. To the right and left of the fireplace are custom concrete "panels" made by our concrete guys.

Our house sounds similar to yours. Our kitchen connects with our familyroom, too. Our kitchen cabinets are dark cherry & the granite is Giallo Ornamental. The floor in the kitchen & familyroom is white oak, finished in a medium brown. Our fireplace hearth is the same level as the floor. We used a brushed cream marble on the surround & hearth, so the finish is matte. The fireplace mantel and the wood around the fireplace are Navajo White---about the same color as the marble. We like the cream marble against the cream color wood. We considered using a brown marble for the surround & hearth but were concered that it would give the overall appearance of a big dark hole in the fireplace area.

Although I like the grey, we have had a lot of grey in our house and just repainted to a white wall with touch of grey and would like to keep built in white right now.

looks like a honed marble or limestone but could also be concrete. (I can't enlarge the pic to get a good look at it) search, "stone fireplace surrounds' and you should find them. I' sure you could have a cement artisan build one similar. the inside of the fireplace is a specialized fire brick tile done in a herringbone. those tiles are really really expensive. I've checked!

What is the right scale for a fireplace surround?

I am posting more pictures to better reflect the colour on the wall on the panel moulding in more subtle lighting (taken over the holidays). We are also looking at a surrounds that have less detail. I like the second one which won't compete with the moulding but my husband is afraid it's too plan. Style of surround not withstanding, I think it will be a less distinctive chose that will allow the rest of the room details to shine. Very excited about having a hearth.

I do not, sorry! The contractor took care of all the costs on this one. The fabricators are just local small companies. Really any decent sheet metal and concrete guys can make these for you. For reference sake, this was a $4M house.
