Comments (12)They might do better if you put them in separate pots. I haven't successfully grown basil at all, but think it likes it warm like tomatoes, so you could leave it in the pot with cherry tomato but it wants more nitrogen, since what you're harvesting are the leaves. Keep it pruned so it will get bushy. Looks like you already have a pot with some basil. Cilantro is a cool-season crop that wants to bolt right away, so definitely put that in a different pot. You might want to get some seeds and keep sowing them (cover lightly with potting mix - they're small) in a shallow container to have it by the time your tomatoes are ready, if you're thinking of making salsa. Cilantro also likes it a bit drier than basil. I was lucky and mine naturalized last year, I didn't have to plant, but this year I may have to (ASAP) as it looks like DH has dug up that bed and probably buried whatever seeds fell off too deeply. Luckily I harvested some seeds last year. That pot is a good size for the cherry tomato - won't need as much N as the greens but you will want to try to fertilize with diluted "bloom booster" type fertilizer when you do water. You could try some fish emulsion. Pick the lower leaves off (just pinch with your thumbnail where the truss meets the main stem, you don't want to pull and peel it down the stem, if you have to just wiggle it back and forth sideways and it will snap off) and try not to splash when you water - that pot's a bit large to bottom water but if you can lift it, try to put it in a 5 gal bucket or brand-new oil change pan or something that the bottom will fit in, water from the top but let the bottom sit in the water a bit if it runs right through, it will soak it back in, then when it's heavy take it out and put it on a surface that won't be damaged by the damp. Comments (6)Thanks for the recipe. My cherry tomatoes are late this year (due to very hot, very dry summer I'm sure). Last night is the first time I've picked more than 5 at a time. I got a sandwich bag full last night. You mention that you like fresh basil. Here is what I have always done when my cherry tomatoes start coming in like gangbusters. Cut cherry tomatoes in half, roll up basil leaves and juliene, crumble some feta cheese, toss everthing with a bit of olive oil in which you have allowed a crushed clove of garlic to marinate for at least a few hours, grind black pepper on top to taste. I don't add salt to this, but taste to see what you think. I find the feta to add enough saltiness for me. The salad can be eaten right away, but it is best when it has been able to meld for an hour or so. With some warm, crusty italian bread, I could eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Comments (6)This soup is very thick and hearty and freezes well. Ok, here goes: (This came from a magazine) Black Bean Soup (Crockpot) 2 14.5 oz. Cans Chicken Broth 2 14.5 oz. Cans Beef Broth 1 lb. dried black beans, soaked overnight and drained 1 cup EACH: chopped carrots, red onion, celery 4 cloves garlic, crushed Spices: 1 1/2 teas. ground cumin 1 bay leaf 1/2 teas. dried oregano 1/2 teas. black pepper 1/4 teas. dried basil 1/4 teas. dried thyme (Don't add these till the soup is made!) 2 TBLS. Fresh Lime Juice 1 tsp salt =========================================================== In Saucepan, bring broths to a boil. In 5 or 6-qt crockpot, combine all ingredients EXCEPT broth, lime and salt. When broth reaches a boil, add it to the crockpot. Cover and cook on high for 5-6 hours or low 10-11 hours, till beans are tender. Transfer 4 cups of the solids into a blender and puree. Stir into the remaining soup with lime and salt. ============================================================ Use your imagination for garnish, as the soup will have that "concrete mix" look to it with the pureed beans.
