Please help-making formal lr less formal, pics and plans. TIA!
Comments (15)Hmm. If you want a transition, here are two other options that might be worth considering.. . . Option A. Put the flat screen on the wall opposite the fireplace -- over the baskets where the small pic is currently. Use the existing armoire for toy storage. Put two swivel or moveable chairs along the left end of the rug. Put another swivel chair about where the left couch cushion is in your second floorplan. Put the couch or a love seat where you show it in your second floor plan. As long as the tv is mounted medium high, you should have three good viewing chairs. Option two. Mount the tv on the wall where the armoire is currently. Put the couch where the loveseat is in your second floor plan. Put one swivel chair to the left of the fireplace (similar to your current floor plan). Consider building a deep uphoulstered bench to replace the bookcase on the left side of the fireplace. This lets you view the TV from the couch, one chair, and possible the bench. In terms of your laughing friends, tell them not to expect any permanent resolution to your LR decorating woes. Those of us with odd shaped LRs (mine is only a tad bigger than yours) end up shoving furniture around a lot as technology and family needs change. Over the years, my couch has been shoved up against every wall in my LR -- plus it "floated" in the middle of the room for about 8 years. Each arrangement has its pluses and minuses. My current arrangement, for example, sacrifices all attempt at having a graceful transition from my front entry and largely ignores my fireplace. Yet it works for us right now. The important thing is to find something that makes your family happy and comfortable -- at least for now....See MoreFormal LR & DR - White Marble or White Granite?
Comments (9)Thank you for all of the responses. Re: Why I'm considering stone vs wood laminate: I had thought initially of putting in the Walnut throughout, but it's been discontinued by the mfg and my flooring co's having a hard time locating enough to do the 3 carpeted rooms that I want to rip out and replace - they can only do one room, and that's going to be the family room that opens off of the kitchen (high profile spot, so must match perfectly). I don't want mismatched/close match laminate in the high profile transition spaces of the front entry arch leading to the LR or the arch leading from the kitchen to the DR, so thought that if I can't match it, than a complete contrast transition would look better than a 'I tried to match and failed' look. I figured that maybe since those 2 rooms are formal, and the rest of the place is informal, it might work to have them with a completely different flooring. I'm not really worried about buying appeal, because I intend to retire in this house - selling will be my DD's worry when she inherits. ;-) I do live in the south, in the Wash. DC area - Biochem, it is exactly those lovely stone floors in the public spaces of this area that gave me the idea. I had thought of marble first, because to me it's a 'warmer' stone and I really like the marble FP surround in my LR, but marble's so high maintenance compared to granite, which I actually prefer to marble. I'm trying to picture in my head the transition of fine grain granite floor to the flowing pattern marble hearth, and in my head it just doesn't work. So, I'm waffling between the two stones. In the end, my flooring co may find enough of the laminate to do more than one more room, in which case I'd do wood in the LR and granite in the DR, and not have to worry about a spilled glass of wine at a dinner. :-) Thank you again for your responses - you're echoing a lot of the questions I've asked myself as I consider options for a graceful transition/flow from room to room, with carpet no where in the picture and without having to rip out and replace the Walnut that I love and don't want to have to replace with what may not hold up as well as what I've currently got....See MoreRepainting instead of redecorating- advice please
Comments (54)So, DH is on board for a darker color, thanks to the photoshopped images above! I have been looking at paint colors, and hope to have time to try some samples in the room this weekend. Here are some colors I'm considering-- BM Yorktowne Green I can't do a new rug right now, as much as I'd like to. I have looked at some fabrics, and I'll do some new pillows, and possibly some valances. Maybe something like this photo below, but the fabric is a cream background with some bright jewel tones in a paisley-ish pattern. I'll snap a pic of my fabric sample when I'm at home. I do like this valance, but something like this is probably way beyond my (lack of) sewing skills....See Morelooking for advice on curtain colors and chandelier for formal dining
