Don't feel embarassed, Angela. We all make mistakes. Is your signature line correct - you live in zone 9? If so, you might not realize that lettuce can't grow there all summer. Lettuce is a "cool season" crop, which means that it doesn't like super hot temps. Which I'm guessing you're getting more and more of? Soon, it will bolt, which means that it will flower/make seeds. So the advice about harvesting the lettuce is because we're all guessing it won't last much longer, anyway. People tend to count on sowing successive crops of lettuce, even if they pick leaves as they grow instead of harvesting the whole head. There are various "heat tolerant" lettuce varities that are less likely to bolt. (Someone mentioned trying those.) I do grow those in the middle of the summer, but regular lettuce is fine for me with a little shade for much of the summer, too. But I'm in a much cooler zone that you. Lettuce has much shallower roots than the other plants, so it would be easier to move. But I hear you on wanting things a certain way. Why not try to make it like you want it? Be prepared to be nice to the plants you move for a week or two after. Don't overwater them, though! And you might still lose one - but that's part of the learning process. Plants do die occasionally, even when we do our best to care for them. As far as the aphids, I hear you're supposed to gently hose off the affected plants daily until the aphid problem is resolved. The water makes the aphids fall off. I have an army of ladybugs in my garden, so I've never had a big issue with aphids - I feel lucky! My overall approach is to attract the beneficial insects with flowers, etc, and let them take care of the "bad" insects. It's worked well enough so far. Enjoy & good luck!

Hey Chris, Are your oldies mature clumps? And are the new intro's under 10 fans? I've noticed this with my seedlings - the first year they bloom it is rare for any of mine to have a bud count higher than 8. But I have seedlings now that are 4 years old, and some have gone from a bud count of 8 or less ... to over 20. Something else I've noticed - the more sun, the higher the bud count, the more reluctant they are to set pods and the uglier the flower by days end. Most of my daylilies are grown in filtered shade and they have a lower bud count than the ones I grow in full sun. But I love being able to enjoy the garden in the evening after dinner. The daylilies I grow in full sun look plumb tuckered out by 6 pm...while the DL's grown in shady areas are still pretty in the later part of the day and are much more fertile. So...I will tolerate a low bud count of 8, if the bloom stays fresh all day and it isn't prone to rust. Kathy (caught between a rock and a hard place)

Hiya everyone! I had the best time yesterday playin in the dirt and planning my garden ideas :) :) :) I promise I'll get that list of wants up here.. I just haven't had the time! My son who has been in and out of the hospital constantly the past 4 years (all during high school) and he has had to be on homebound/tutoring has decided to go to prom tonight. I had 3 days notice lol But we got him a tux and since he doesn't drive yet I guess I'll be driving him back n forth to it tonight down in Atlanta. (ATL traffic....eek!) And today I was w/ my mom up at the hospital to get her another CT scan. She's battling some nasty cancer right now. AND then my other son has a skateboard competition Saturday, and my daughter has her first soccer game on Saturday and there's an arts/crafts festival I wanna go to, and my mom needs us to come over and work in her yard a bit since she can't get out to do it.. then I also gotta go to my brother's house to plant a pink dogwood we bought them. (memorial for the baby they just lost in utero. :( .... ) sooooo my next few days are gonna be SERIOUSLY jampacked! Agree it looks wilted, so might be getting too much hot sun and/or too little water for a new planting. It also looks like your soil is hard clay, which very few plants will tolerate.
