Redesign small living room help needed
Need help redesigning this small living room in a 75 year old home. I like minimal and sleek. Open to any ideas you all might have.

We did not have a TV but I would suggest you put the tv on the wall where you have the sofa with mabe even a bit of storage and display with it I like Besta from Ikea for that purpose we had our DR at the other end of this space , what are you doing with the empty space in your phto

Comments (35)I am glad you liked it! :) Sorry for the late response, I've tried to think about alternative solution with more passage space. It's not so standard as previous two layouts, but it does give more space and maybe it give you an inspiration with your living room: I've choose the red stools to balance the red chair and to define and highlight central conversation area, but at the same time to keep view at fireplace unblocked (when they are not in use). I had to change color of one chair, since having the chair in the corner in the same red color kept kicking the space out of balance. I don't know if you like that trend of layered rugs, in the case you do, I think it could help in your case to break a bit long, rectangular shape of the room. On the short wall I though buffet with a mirror or art could provide a focal point for seatings placed by fireplace. Comments (60)thanks! the sunset painting is temp, had a nail there already from some Halloween decoration, but good point centering it. Glad this rug works because the other one was a wool rug and it was a pain to clean and would shed so much. One thing I wanted to ask, I hate the way the ceiling beams connect to the wall, it looks like Lego and cheap looking. I want to add a triangular piece of wood that screws into the beam and the wall (painted the same for as the beams). Is there a name for this? Looked up wood beam wall connection but nothing (English is not my first language). I feel like I might have to customer make this thing myself. Comments (4)Paint the walls and the window/door/crown molding trim white. You can leave the wood paneling as is, if you like. That will immediately brighten the space. From there, start with a gorgeous rug that's larger than what you have now. I'd also get some black spray paint for use on metal, and paint out the brass on the fireplace grate. I would get a light colored low key rug bigger than the one in the photo. Put the TV where the sofa is now, and the sofa opposite that with 2 end tables. A swivel chair for near the back wall, and maybe an accent guest chair on the side with the tv near the dining room. The arched entry to the dining room limits how "sleek and minimal'' you can be, but you certainly don't have to be old fashioned or cluttered. I love this set up, but you have to me explain how I think it will work. I am standing in your front yard looking in your windows.Sofa is in front of the windows.
Solid wall opposite becomes the t v wall.
Short wall, left of the sofa (where t v is now) accommodates two chairs, table/lamp and wall art.
Ignore the window on the right because it is your entry.
Notice area rug and coffee table.

Are you purchasing new furniture? If so, you should consider a different sofa, still comfortable, but sleeker.
Measured properly, you might even have the space for a sectional.
