seeking creative solutions for over microhood storage

This is a long shot, but I hate wasted space (and wasted money!) so wondering if anyone has a cool hack to offer for this scenario:

We bought a low profile OTR microwave that is ~11" tall with the plan to install it under a 24" cabinet (next to 36" cabinets on the sides) to have it at the proper height. We later learned that our cabinets (the line is going out of production, so the stock was limited) was only available in an 18" height (which would be the correct height for a standard height OTR microwave). This would be an unsafe height (above shoulder height) for the low profile microwave, though (even though both primary users are 6'+).

So we're deciding whether to 1) scrap the micro we bought (wasted money, yuck) and reinstall our existing microhood which is the right height to fit, but isn't very aesthetically pleasing for a new kitchen, or 2) install the low profile microwave 6 inches lower.

If we go with option 2, then we have to decide what to do with the space. The simplest is just to install a filler strip to cover the sin. But that's 6" tall, 12" deep, by 30" wide of wasted space! Painful in our small kitchen where we're optimizing every square inch that we can.

We love clever storage solutions--can anyone think of or have you seen a product that could be used in this situation? Some sort of horizontal spice pull out? I don't want to just leave open shelf, (even for cuttingboards etc) because with it being twice as deep as tall, things would inevitably end up lost in the back of the nook.

While the Whirlpool/KitchenAid low-profile microwaves allow a minimum 24" distance between the cabinet and cooktop (60" above the floor), but the Samsung and GE Profile low-profile models specify the usual 30" distance (66" from the floor) so maybe just install your oven the same way.

"I don't want to just leave open shelf..."

If the oven is vented you can't do this anyway.

what cabinet line is it..is there something unique? you should be able to get a cabinet frame somewhere else..then get a door frame either mdf to paint [ or ]... what is your species??? then insert seeded glass...... [note in above picture to the right is seeded glass] ....... Above the hood location is logical spot to have a different door. I've seen the low profile microwave installed in a display. I think its got positives...its really much more minimal look [sleek and attractive] and a different door above would be logical. what is your door style??

syllabus and bleigh - I am going to check out ikea - usually the stuff they have is in chrome or some other silver color which I do not have anywhere in my house at the moment, but I will take a look. Patser - that is one of the problems I have with the huge rack/basket I have now. I think it does leave bruises on things. busybee3 and southernfrenchie. I do love the idea of those hanging baskets. I would love to find some that are two tiered and shorter and hang them from under the cabinets. I could just see DH's face if I told him I wanted to hang that from the ceiling in our kitchen. :) I just don't think we have a good place for it. Hmmmm well maybe over the island sort of area. I will ask him what he thinks. oh and syllabus - I will link the item below. It is from a company named America Retold. I have fallen in love with half their stuff. Especially these.... Hopefully that thing I did order will be in soon and I can either decide I love it or rule it out and keep going on the search. That is a great solution. I dont have a WIC, so I had to come up with a creative storage solution too. I put in a 5 drawer high boy dresser and ended up getting some wooden desk trays that I could stack on top of each other. They fit perfectly in the drawers. I used ice cube trays for earrings like you did, and I stumbled in some silverware drawer organizers that were the perfect depth to lay out my necklaces. I also got some drawer organizer boxes at Ikea to hold bracelets & chunky beaded necklaces. A few years ago I got hold of a wooden silverware box. I tore out the insides and relined it with velvet, it holds my stash of vintage rhinestone jewelry. It looks like a ginormous jewelry box, and I guess that's what it is now!.

Love that look with the continuous UCL between the hood and uppers. My modest ideas: In keeping with the lighting theme, here is my LED install, with a lower lumen led within the shelving, just to add accent, and the under-counter lighting. It is all on one switch. Didn't think about the hood area, though it does have lighting. My small 15" inset cabinet. I didn't order this cabinet with pullouts, like the others, because I was trying to save some money. After 3 years of dysfunction, here is my aftermarket Rev-a-Shelf that is 9". I could have fit the 11" one in there if I could open my door past 90degrees (the wall is in the way). I could have mounted the door with a kit, for a door pull out setup, but I was afraid I'd mess it up and the door wouldn't fit right. This works, and I can fit some flat items to the side. I like that it has individual pull outs so both levels are accessible. Bigger would have been nice though.

Hi Colleen! I would love to see pictures as you go through your master bath remodel! I'll eventually be remodeling my main bathroom and the 1/2 bath in the master. In the main bath I'm taking out the tub/shower surround and replacing with a "petite" claw foot tub, no shower. New toilet, new vanity/sink, and a small baker's rack for extra storage. Putting in a medicine cabinet/mirror, frosting the window so I don't need a window treatment, and a new towel rack. Also new flooring, paint, fan, light. I'm not sure what I'm doing in the 1/2 bath, except I know I'm stealing a little room from the bedroom to put in a walk-in shower. SO...I'd love to see your progress and hear about the whole experience! Do you have colors and flooring, etc. picked out yet? Haha! Cathy--so true about the garden tub. :-)

We removed a standard OTR and put in the exact one in your picture in the hole. It's fine and I'm only 5'2". We are remodeling our kitchen in the next few months so this was never meant to be a long term solution, but even if we weren't, given how small our current kitchen is, it is 100 x better than the low-hanging one it replaced. It doesn't vent outside anyway and I don't think being any closer to the cooktop would make a difference. For actual venting, do what Lomo says and get a real hood (which is what we will do).

For what it is worth, I LOVE the sleek look of that skinny OTR microwave, but think it is because it is between dark cabinets. They appear to stick out more with white cabinets, which I will have. People with large kitchens don't seem to understand the constraints of remodeling a small kitchen, and how efficient and space saving an OTR microwave is.
