My jewelry storage solution

This is my latest solution to my increasing costume jewelry collection. Granted, I have a large walk in closet, so I had the space to do this. I used one mirror square surrounded by 8 cork squares.

I am using it neckaces, bracelets and a few pair of earrings. My other earrings are in ice cube trays in a drawer.

OMG, Terriks, what a fanstatic idea!!!! And it wouldn't cost a lot to do, either. I have a quite small walk-in closet, but now I'm going to be racking my brain trying to use/adapt your idea somehow. I've got to tell my sisters, DD, and girlfriends about this one!

That is a great solution. I dont have a WIC, so I had to come up with a creative storage solution too. I put in a 5 drawer high boy dresser and ended up getting some wooden desk trays that I could stack on top of each other. They fit perfectly in the drawers. I used ice cube trays for earrings like you did, and I stumbled in some silverware drawer organizers that were the perfect depth to lay out my necklaces. I also got some drawer organizer boxes at Ikea to hold bracelets & chunky beaded necklaces.

A few years ago I got hold of a wooden silverware box. I tore out the insides and relined it with velvet, it holds my stash of vintage rhinestone jewelry. It looks like a ginormous jewelry box, and I guess that's what it is now!.

I've only just stumbled on this thread, so I hope you don't mind me contributing! I'm very much into Craft Fayres and all things hand crafted and have built up a collection of about 7-8 earring "mushrooms" which stand about 3-4" high and have a series of holes in the cap of the mushroom for either dangly earrings or even studs. Sort of like this http://www.cole-woodturners.co.uk/images/earring_stand_-_takes_12_pairs_271108-1.jpg I've seen some that are flatter and have a second tier above. For bracelets I have another wooden stand with 3 legs/spokes on top of a central pillar and the bracelets just dangle. Necklace stands are about 10-11" high and similarly have either mini hooks for hanging chains/necklaces or the other one has little slots which is better suited to beaded/leather necklaces. Until I began writing this post, I was going to say my biggest problem was storing the "cuff" type bracelets, which just twizzle and fall off the bracelet tree, but a search on Google Images has given me a WHOOOLLLLEEEE load of other avenues and ideas to follow up! I was hoping I'd be able to attach a picture of my dressing table with my variety of trees, but I cant work out how...!

If you're near a major city, look for a store selling Retail Fixtures -- the display cases stores use to hold all their goodies. Or go on eBay. I bought several jewelry trays at a retail fixture store and stack them two deep in my small shallow drawers. They come in many different configurations within a modular sizing schema. They're much cheaper that the ones the Container Store and BB&B sell, and IMO, much more attractive and sturdy. The pieces are sold separately - there's a 'tray' (box) and a 'tray insert' (flocked molded plastic). If you want to get fancy, you could easily build a 'rack' into your drawers so the upper trays can slide side to side to easily access your lower trays. Thanks so much for all your great suggestions. Woodchuck, I LOVE the one you made for your daughter!!!! The inside is exactly what I am wanting to make for myself! If I can get my DH to help me, I'm going to do the same thing, but with a mirror instead of a picture . . . I think. Can you tell me what you used to mount the hooks with? It looks like pieces of molding with individual hooks screwed in to it. Were they special hooks? Your picture idea is very smart, as it would probably be overlooked by a burglar. Great idea! Thank you so much for posting those pics for me! JGTBM: love that idea of using a piano bench and cutting off the legs. Yes! I used the wire hooks in my old kitchen, to hang cooking utensils next to the stove (they had to go on the side of a melamine cabinet). The hooks worked great and came off with no trouble when it was time. I just brought home a new batch of them yesterday to hang measuring cups and spoons on the door of my baking supplies cabinet. I saw that they have larger decorative hooks too, and I am contemplating using those to hang towels so I don't have to drill holes through the tile (whenever our tile gets installed...). Some of the big hooks are metallic, either chrome or brushed stainless or ORB-looking (some are made of actual metal too). I am thinking those might look nicer than the white plastic ones. I also probably need to retire the magnetic write-on wipe-off board that I keep on the fridge for jotting down grocery needs (the board is at least 15 years old and has ads for cattle vaccines on it). I already have some picture hanger things that I haven't used so I should probably move the grocery list to inside a cabinet door, maybe a pad with paper I can just tear off and take to the store. I saw the caddies you mentioned when I was getting the hooks at a local hardware store. The ones I saw were about the right size for sponges or scrubbies but without the vent holes at the bottom.

I have a similar set up in my closet. I have a full length mirror on the far wall in the closet, and over the mirror I have a couple of those "bars" with a lot of hooks on them. Those got crowded so then I just started banging nails in the wall around them. I also have a jewelry drawer in my closet divided into small squares, which is where I keep my earrings.

That's a marvelous idea, Terriks. I just wish I had enough wall space in my walk-in to do this, but I don't! I have a huge jewelry box, but tend to forget what's in it half the time. I'm very visual, and have to actually "see" the necklaces and bracelets to remember what I have. This is the perfect solution.

I put a piece of cork in a pretty frame and have that sitting on my vanity. I was lucky enough to find a bunch of clearance pushpins that were flowers and butterflys - I guess they were too cutesy for an office setting but perfect for me. I keep my silver necklaces in a jewelry box to cut down on tarnishing.

So many great ideas! I wish my walk-in closet was roomy enough for terriks idea, but I have rods on three sides. I am also very visual so I don't like having all my stuff in boxes I can't see through. You've all given me plenty of ideas, thanks!

when we redid our closets, i had a couple of my husband's tieracks left over that i've kept... i've thought several times that they would be good to hang and use for necklaces.... but haven't done it... yet!

I don't have a walk-in closet, but I saw this in the PB teen catalog. It is a jewelry cabinet, hidden behind a framed full length mirror. Thought it was a great idea and will (eventually!) try to make my own out of an existing mirror I have.
