Wild highbush exist, often used in breeding like V. darrowii which is sort of a wild SHB. NHB has Vaccinium corymbosum as the wild species used. It can grow 12 feet high. Vaccinium angustifolium the lowbush is more of a ground cover type. I don't know much about rabbiteye plants. Many of the modern cultivars have numerous wild and older cultivars in the lineage. Some have very complex crosses done over decades Let look at Pink Lemonade. PINK LEMONADE is a hexaploid that is half V. ashei Reade (rabbiteye) and half synthetically-derived, hexaploid, highbush-type germplasm. It has been evaluated in New Jersey and Oregon. PINK LEMONADE was partially derived from a pink-fruited sibling of âÂÂPink Champagneâ (i.e. G-434), thus the two selections are related, even though they possess different ploidy levels. PINK LEMONADE is a cross of NJ 89âÂÂ158âÂÂ1 x Delite (V. ashei) and was originally tested as ARS 96-138. The female parent, NJ 89âÂÂ158âÂÂ1 came from a cross of two triploids, NJ 856âÂÂ1 x NJ 859âÂÂ1 made by Dr. Nicholi Vorsa (Rutgers University). The clone NJ 856âÂÂ1 is a cross of G-434 (a sibling of âÂÂPink ChampagneâÂÂ) x NJ 85-CS (an albino-fruited, wild, 2x selection of V. corymbosum). The clone NJ 859âÂÂ1 is a cross of V. darrowi >Florida 4B= x Rancocas (see attached pedigree). The cross that produced PINK LEMONADE was made by M.K. Ehlenfeldt at Chatsworth, New Jersey in 1991 I added Cara's Choice because it's Ehlenfeldt's favorite blueberry. CARA'S CHOICE, a new highbush blueberry cultivar with improved sweetness, firmness, and flavor. Tested under both G-695 and ARS 95-5, CARA'S CHOICE is a progeny from the cross G-144 x US 165. G-144 originated from the cross 11-93 (a sibling of 'Bluecrop') x 'Darrow'. US 165 is a self of US 79, a hybrid of the diploid species Vaccinium darrowii 'Fla 4B' x US 56. US 56 originated from a cross of hexaploid V.constablaei x T-65. T-65 is a rabbiteye hybrid from the cross of 'Walker' x 11-180 (= 'Myers' x 'Black Giant'). The cross that produced CARA'S CHOICE was made by A.D. Draper at Beltsville, Maryland in approximately 1977. The seedling was selected in 1981 at the Atlantic Blueberry Company, Hammonton, NJ, and subsequently evaluated by A.D. Draper, N. Vorsa, A.W. Stretch and M.K. Ehlenfeldt at both Atlantic Blueberry Co. and Variety Farms in Hammonton, NJ. So you can say Cara's Choice is a Northern-Southern highbush rabbiteye. Same with Pink Lemonade. I shop at multiple stores. Pay day is every other Friday so I that is when I go to Wal-Mart or Smith's (Kroger owned). Every 2 weeks we also get coffee beans at the little mom and pop shop. We go to Sprouts every 2 weeks as their ads overlap on Wednesdays. This is actually getting less frequent as they have not put the bulk things on sale that I want the most as frequently (steel cut oats and short grain brown rice). The bread outlet is a once a month trip. Other stores such as Keller's (for meat), Trader Joe's, the international markets, Vitamin Cottage (for other bulk items), I alternate months. Some things I get through Amazon's subscribe and save and that can vary in frequency. Eggs are mostly from my hens and many of our vegetables come from our garden. Some of the variety in shopping is about the money savings but it is more along the lines of trying to match the quality to a certain price point and meeting my needs of acquiring a diversity of ingredients. Arborio rice at TJ's, quality meat at Keller's, red lentils in bulk at Vitamin Cottage, etc. Part of it is me trying to maintain a well stocked pantry because my moods are fickle and if the pantry has a variety of things, I can cook according to my mood. Pre-planned menus never, ever work for me.

I remember the first time (as an adult about 20-25-years ago) I saw cut watermelon in the produce department in the middle of winter and my first thought was that it's JUST NOT RIGHT. We need to consume cooling/hydrating fruits and vegetables in the summer.....and warming/filling foods in the winter. But traditional foods and ways to prepare and eat them is something we really no longer practice due to the world market. The little grocery store my parents bought their groceries from in the 50's and 60's carried carrots, lettuce (most of the time, but not always), celery, potatoes, sweet potatoes (but not all the time), apples, bananas and citrus in the 6-foot produce department. We ate and preserved garden produce in-season. That crock of sauerkraut we packed with the fall crop of cabbage was used for months. Now, people kill the good bacteria in kraut by heat processing it in jars.....so it's dead food instead of living food. In the winter I purchase very little produce, other than bananas and some citrus (which is seasonal then). I grow my own at home in the form of fresh sprouts and micro-greens, as well as fresh herbs growing in a sunny south window, supplemented by frozen and freeze-dried, which are higher in nutrients than anything from the produce department. There is nothing "seasonal", nor "fresh", nor full of nutrients, unless you can pick it yourself and eat it at the peak of freshness. Anything warehoused is DOA. rolling river was good but hartmanns I've got some ratty plants. nourse farms has good berry bushes too. just got some blackberry and raspberries from them. fedco in maine has lots of berry plants also. little more pricey but you get a bigger fuller plant. good luck!
