The Art of Living in Small Spaces
Comments (4)When I saw this article, I thought about the American Indians living in tents many years ago because the house isn't much larger than a tent. Instead of each person keeping tools, they passed them around and shared them. We all have too much stuff. Thanks for another good link Flowerlady....See MoreHelp with layout of our new small living/dining space
Comments (8)Just wanted to thank groveraxle, and hollybar for taking the time respond and share some design suggestions. We haven't received our keys yet, but I am just sharing some photos of how the realtors had decided to stage the property. What we didn't mainly like about the way it was staged was that the focal point of the living room was looking right into the kitchen. In addition, having the dining table on the opposite side, and not next to the kitchen seemed a bit odd, to us at least. Thanks again for your suggestions, as well as suggestions for furniture options! My wife found another potential sofa below as well: https://www.structube.com/en/falcon-3-seater-sofa-46-19-68?pid=18218...See MoreSmall Open Space Exposed Brick Living Room with Awkward Wall Niche
Comments (16)Yeah, I did wonder if this room needed to serve other purposes, being in NYC, but we all know a coffee table can serve many purposes! :)) If you need a real desk (and can't squeeze it into a bedroom), I think I'd suggest drawing your room to scale, on graph paper, and then cutting out the various pieces to try. Here are some places I would start: 1) If you give up on the fireplace as a decorative element, you could put a desk against the kitchen wall and get a desk chair that has a swivel (so that it can be turned away from the desk when you have company. (Keep a loose runner you can throw over everything on it, heh.) 2) If you keep the couch toward the window and keep it "apartment size," then there should be space between it and the hallway for a desk. It may have to be a little narrow to not cause a pinch point there, but you could tape it off and see. 3) you could get a small workstation-size desk just a couple of feet wide and put it in the window/white wall corner, facing the windows. then just start your couch ensemble a little farther down the wall and put an end table and lamp at the kitchen end. or I guess you could use it anywhere, and roll it away when company comes! While I'm thinking about it, the trick to tiny apartments is to make everything do double duty. Coffee table with a drawer underneath for remotes and coasters (and placemats); end table that hides a cabinet for computer gear; etc. Good luck! hope this helps....See MoreSpace Planning for a Small Living Room
Comments (15)I am a craftsman house lover. I built a new craftsman and we moved in 4 years ago. Why did I build instead of just buying one of the many craftsman bungalows in my area? Because every single one we looked at had been remuddled. I could tell exactly what decade the house had been remuddled based on what they had done. Most had been remuddled to the point that bringing it back to it's former glory would have been more daunting than building the new craftsman we built. Those that might have worked would not work for us because of location or because of things like stairs and bedrooms upstairs with no chance to add an elevator, or even a stair lift later on. (We are seniors) Sadly more and more of these beautiful old homes are being ruined by those who think HGTV is great design....See MoreLyn Nielson
