I see landscape fabric already laid down. I think you'll find most people on this site will try hard to dissuade you from using landscape fabric, with or without rock. Fabric doesn't prevent weeds. Seed will fall onto it and weeds will grow on top. Debris from the trees, dust etc with land amongst the stones and more weeds will grow. It will be an ongoing nightmare to clean up the rocks. It would be far healthier for your soil and your trees, and less work for you, to remove the fabric, forget rocks and just use an organic mulch as GG suggests.

Agree with @floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK that cloth is a nightmare. You won't be able to plant bushes next year. Not much grows well in total shade and you will also have tree roots to contend with. Instead of that paver edging just cut deep edges and mulch. All the above I am dealing with because a "landscaper" put this weed crap down.

I’ll pile on. I’m a gardener and I feel landscape fabric + rocks is a crime against nature. And someday, someone else working with this piece of ground is going to be very, very unhappy with you.

My suggestion: burn the fabric, lay down layers of wet cardboard and cover it with 3” of natural hardwood mulch.

Alrighty, I was unaware of the downsides of rock. I really only didn't want mulch because I would need to re-do it every year but it seems like the better option, and I can actually find a better color option

@jck910 Is the paver edging the stones around the outside? Its what was there before, I do like the look of them though

I had fabric and rocks at my last house and loved it. I had the rock about the size of a grapefruit or larger. Low maintenance. I used river rock. I had no weeds pop up. If I wanted to plant something I would just move the rocks to the side and place them back after it was planted. The leaves that fell in the fall were easy to remove with a leaf blower. Last time I went by the house, the rocks were still there and it still looked good.

If you put down a good, thick (3-4 inch) layer of mulch, you shouldn’t have to put much more down next year. If you do find you need more, it should only require a light refreshing layer. Just be careful not to displace it when weeding, mowing, or raking and it should last. I would suggest a natural brown color for the mulch since you have a brown roof and brown trim on your home.

Forgot to add that pine bark mulch is much better for your garden beds than the shredded cypress mulch you see sold everywhere. Shredded mulch tends to become compacted, blocking the flow of water and air from getting to the plant roots, whereas bark-type mulch remains loose and porous. I have come to prefer the pine bark “mini-nuggets” that Lowe’s sells. I think it’s more attractive than the larger sized bark mulches, but that’s simply a personal choice.

I hope you removed the plastic/fabric while it was still easy to do so.
