my first bowling ball - can't decide grout color

Please take a look & tell me what color grout you would use. Trying to decide if light or dark would look better.

Very nice! Has to be your personal preference (I'd probably go a light color grout) ...have you looked at the BB in the GJ Inspirational album? I posted a link today on another thread...but I'll put it here...maybe it can help you decide. TFS! Jeanne S.

I too think that with the softer colors of the glass pieces, the lighter grout would look better. Let us see your finished creation!

Styrofoam is used by many cement & concrete sculptors as a base for their work. Start by building up a few layers of plaster wrap...the same stuff doctors use to build up casts. Most large hobby stores carry it these days. Then apply about an inch of a 50/50 cement/sand mix over the whole thing. Once that sets, you can use standard or latex modified grout to adhere your mosaic. I've seen similar pieces scaled up to several feet in diameter and they hold up very well. I've even seen a concrete "sofa" made using the same technique.

Welcome Beecharmer2! This is such a fun forum with the nicest of people! If you look on the GardenJunk homepage, you'll see "FAQ" at the top of the page. It tells how to make some of the cool projects you see on the forum. There's one for marbles on bowling balls...same idea as pennies. I'll post the link below. I haven't grouted mine but I bet someone else will speak to that. This was my first bowling ball. So easy and FUN! When you do a bowling ball, have a container you can sit it in. I used an old heavy pan. The GEII is a silicone sealant. I found mine in the glue department at Lowe's. Have fun! Post a picture if you create a Bowling Ball masterpiece!!! Great job..............another idea to put on my TO-DO list! OMG I'll never get to the end. What type of glue did you use to hold the glass pieces on? Does anyone know what type of paint may have been used on the ones in the GJ Inspiration Album. My thought process really started rolling after seeing all those inspireing bowling balls.

Grout needs time to "cure" like cement. Did you have it dry in the sun? Because that could cause the cracking. It is best to let it dry in a cooler, shaded area so it doesn't cure too quickly. Otherwise, your grout may have been too wet when you applied it. When you spread it, it should be about the consistency of brownie batter (that's the best way I know to describe it) - still spreadable like mud but not as thin as pancake batter (can you tell I love eating? lol). You were right to use sanded grout and a grout sealer.

I think lighter grout,also. Dark grout would just make it drab.

Thank you all. :-) & especially for sharing the link for the albumn - I had somehow missed it in my searching. Very inspirational & I have 3 more balls to do something with.

I love the dragonfly one - I've been trying to figure out how to get a dragonfly on one & this approach had not occurred to me.

That looks amazing!!! Where did you find the green ovals? I have only seen round ones. I would go with light grout too.
