I've read about medlars, never seen one in real life though. The book "Uncommon Fruits Worthy of Attention" said that medlars must be bletted (meaning, softened and a bit fermented maybe?) before being eaten. Then they taste of cinnamon apples. Again what I've read not what I've experienced! I have an aunt who blets medlars. Every time I hear her mention bletted medlars, I can’t help but think of the name Bette Midler.
