Still Dry After So Many Promises About Rain

My daylilies are still thirsty. (There will be new photos after my rant.) Last night radar showed a huge system of rain would be coming through Nashville between 10 pm. and 2 a.m. TV Weather forecasters said it was a sure bet and gave it a 100 percent chance. I checked outside before we went to bed at 10:15 and there was indeed very light rain. But something happened, because when I looked out this morning, nothing was wet. There wasn't even a trace of rain in my gage and the tubs that hold my seedling cups. The system must have broken up before it got to Nashville. Then at about 10:30 this morning, Microsoft told me on the laptop that Nashville was experiencing heavy rain. I looked outside. It was dark, but my yard got not a drop. Woe is me and my super thirsty plants.

There are not many new seedlings left to bloom. I see a couple just putting up scapes, but most of the new ones bloomed early. These first bloomed the last couple of days. I think today was the first morning without a brand new seedling.

(August Frost x Winter's Angel) X Rowena Yaeger - This is the best of the three siblings. I like the white edges on the sepals. The bloom is just under 8 inches.

Unknown X Unknown - The squirrels played games with my labels in this bed. Some of them are mixed up, and some of them disappeared. I suspect this is Crowning Fire X Woman in Red. It was very sunfast at the end of our recent 92-degree day.

Debra, I was sure you had gotten rain! I looked at weather radar and it showed ALL of the Nashville area rain covered. You were probably that one tiny unseen dot without rain. So sorry! You deserve a rant.

So glad to see EITV-bugs got mine. Beautiful photo of Neon Flamingo and Rapture of Love. Yay on the Blushing Escapade bloom!

That red seedling is so bright. The August Frost seedling must be impressive in a clump. I really like the Maney Augustine seedling. There’s something almost delicate about its appearance.

Hi Scott and Olpea- Sounds like good advice. I think I may be still seeing a slight blueish hue, but it's a big hard to tell as I did use less copper this year. (1.5 tbsp instead of 2). I've included the label info below from my notes. My trees are all somewhere between green tip, 1/4 green, and just a few 1/2 green tips. No tight clusters yet. The Immunox sprays will help with the scab, so I'm more concerned with FB. I did get some FB strikes last year, but they really weren't a big deal. Still debating on what to do. THANK YOU to you all for taking the time to respond to my post. I am delighted that I was able to still get some nice photos here and there to keep the beauty alive for months to come. Even thought the majority of blooms were lost, there were still some little 'miracles' in the garden, for which I am grateful. roseberri....First of all, thank you for your kind comment. Geshwind's Orden truly wants to be a climber, but I don't have climbing space where 'he' is so I have him pegged down in a circular fountain-shape which seems to agree with him so far. But he isn't a small shrub and grows very lanky and up, up, and away. There is only one bloom in June, but it is prolific. It will get some blackspot later in the season without spraying, but during its bloom time it is quite healthy. (I don't spray my old roses). I like how the inner petals are a deeper pink than the outer ones. Its quite pretty. sherry....Leda IS one cool chick. I love how her white flower emerges from a blood-red bud, showing just a trace of red on the petal edges. I don't know if she would be happy in FL or not since she actually seems to enjoy my cold weather. Anybody else know? aliska....My Madame Plantier has never repeated. She is strictly once-blooming here. I didn't know she could repeat. But then a lot of roses that supposedly repeat, don't always here (too short a growing season perhaps?). Of my roses listed above, the only repeaters are Paul Neyron, Mrs. John Laing and Louise Odier. I have heard it said that John Hopper 'can' repeat, but mine hasn't so far. To All.... Today it was (gasp!)...SUNNY! All day long, nothing but blue above and warm sun shining down. The old roses are mostly done for and the deer returned again last night to munch yet again, and I saw the first japanese beetle today...but it was SUNNY!!!! YAY! I will try to answer all your questions, but first I must thank citymomof3! I just went down into the basement to check what the color name was and found it flooded with an inch of water! So I just finished calling the plumber! :-( Not sure what the problem is, but I am sure it will be expensive! So.....will get the color name for you, but probably not today! Red, actually I have been starting to think the same. At first it seemed so bare, but after living with it for a week or so, it doesn't seem so bare. Will perhaps wait a little longer before deciding to add more. Sue, no I did not make the quilt. It was a lucky find at Penny's. I say lucky because lavender/purple is NOT the in color right now. Here is a close up of it. organic....I hate to admit it, but it is just a plain ceiling fan with a round globe. I am looking for a different light fixture or globe/shade for it. We need to keep the fan as this room has no heat and the ceiling fan does help circulate the warm and cool air depending on the season! hoosiergirl, yes I just love the set. I was so excited when we found it. There are 6 pieces altogether. The wash pitcher and basin, and mug a "slop" jar where the dirty water was poured into, and chamber pot and lid that was in the carpet picture. bungalow house, our home is 140 years old and guess what? I only have a trap door in the floor to get down to the basement, so....Here's hoping the plumber calls soon!!!! I guess I am on my way out to the shed to get the shop vac and start vacuuming up water and then bringing it up the ladder a 5 gallon bucket at a time! Gotta love these old houses! Marylu

Congratulations on finding a live doormat. I guess _you're_ happily married, but would your wife say the same thing if asked? As to not answering your questions, you totally missed MY point, which was that many men end up unfavourably comparing their wives to the fantasy girls they see at the strip clubs. And then they become dissatisfied with their wives, and then everything goes downhill. Why should a wife have to imitate a stripper to keep her husband's interest? Presumably if she wanted to be a stripper she'd have been one in the first place. If a man wants a fantasy wife, he should marry one. Yes, his wife's feelings are more important because unless that was the deal when they married, he shouldn't be moving the goalposts, especially when he can see that it's something that upsets her, makes her feel insecure and inadequate, not necessarily jealous. This is called _consideration and compromise_. No doubt there are activities his wife foregoes because she knows her husband wouldn't be happy about them.

Kate - Yes, it's hard to believe my yard didn't get anything. It's like being in the Bermuda Triangle. Right now that grandchild of August Frost is just one fan since it's brand new. I was hoping the Maney Augustine seedling would have teeth, but it is a nice bitone. Today it looked more like a bicolor.

Lovely clump of Entwined in the Vine, mine had its 1st scape of the season! Thank you so much for it, I hated so much losing my clump. It was such a nice clump too! Rapture of Love may be my favorite. Neon Flamingo looks good. I got Neon Flamingo a couple years ago, it bloomed both years. It was only 2 fans last year but there are 6 or 7 this year, and blooms are much deeper, brighter and probably twice the size they have been previously. I took pictures which I will show in another post, but it is even brighter in person than my camera saw. My favorite seedlings are Maney Augustine X Bubblegum Queen #2 and Blue-Eyed Bandit X Twirling Tower 2

Your pictures would never show that you got very little rain. Neon Flamingo is one bright daylily. Another good group of seedling pics. I see in my garden that Dearest Valentine is going for another record number of scapes this year.

Julia - I don't take pictures of the ones that have badly browning foliage, and there are plenty of those. It sounds like Dearest Valentine will be a nice clump for you this year!

Nancy - How was the convention? I hope you will share your pictures of the tours. Glad to know your Entwined in the Vine is blooming! Rapture of Love has a magnificent flower, but the plant habit leaves a lot to be desired. I'm trying to cross it with Star Lord. I just hope the pods stay on.

Gorgeous photos as usual, Debra. Neon Flamingo and Entwined itn the Vein look especially good. Mine were not so bright as usual this year for no good reason. I always like Primal Scream too, but there isn't a stinker in the bunch. As for the seedlings: Lovely near white on

I love the Maney Augustine seedling, I always like a pretty bitone. The August Frost seedling caught my eye too, a delicate beauty.

Kay - I think my flowers have deeper color than usual because of the cool weather. I don't ever remember a daylily season when we've had this many cool days and nights in Nashville. Yesterday only got to the mid-70s. Thanks for your comments on so many of them!

Sherry - I do like the looks of the Maney Augustine seedling. It only has a few buds this first time to bloom. I'm keeping that child of my August Frost seedling and culling the other two. If it didn't have such a large bloom, it would get culled too.

Nice Debra! Blushing Escapade is my favorite of the named. Rapture of Love and Neon Flamingo also stand out.

Of the seedlings, Blue-Eyed Bandit X Twirling Tower 2 and Maney Augustine X Bubblegum Queen #2 are the prettiest.

Thanks for your comments, Brad! Blushing Escapade is a pretty shade of pink. Kate was nice enough to share with me when I mentioned it might be a good one to use in pink hybridizing. I haven't been able to use it yet, but maybe tomorrow.
