Waterproofing tub inside shower stall
Comments (30)Hello! I just found this very helpful thread in my search for for ideas/caveats for installing an alcove tub in a wet room/shower enclosure (total enclosure dimensions are 5'6" x 5'0", so the tub could be placed on either wall depending on tub length). This is for a guest bathroom which will be used by guests of all ages, including our ageing parents. My mother in law only takes baths, but father in law only showers and has mobility issues so we want to avoid him having to step into a tub to shower. We want to avoid blowing the budget on the tub itself, so want to avoid cast iron (due to cost and weight), and limited space won't allow for the added width of a tub deck for an undermount/drop-in tub. I did come across the American Standard Studio fold over edge acrylic/fiberglass alcove tub (photo attached), which seems like a decent option to allow us to tile the front apron, but it only comes in 60" x 30" (which is OK, but it would be nice to know if there are any workable 5'6" tubs we could consider). As this thread is 3 years old, I'm wondering what the latest recommendations are for the type of tub to use in a wet room and how to waterproof it. Any ideas appreciated!...See MoreMy journey finding someone who will waterproof my shower
Comments (43)Xedos, Not sure I'm understanding (but thank you so much for advising me on this). For the contract, I will have as much spelled out as I can. As for speaking to the contractors initially to get estimates, I have not been asking for specific waterproofing methods. Based on the conversations I've had with contractors around here it looks like Laticrete is the only vendor around here with a real presence. It's the only product that multiple contractors mentioned using. I haven't spoken to anyone who has said .. I've used laticrete, redguard and ditra ... which one would you prefer. After weeding through the contractors that don't waterproof the walls, and the ones that don't preslope the floor when using a vinyl pan, I feel like if I filter contractors by a specific kind of waterproofing before they even give me an estimate, I will never find someone. Ok, I'm off to email my newly drafted scope of work to a contractor that I got off the CTEF website. Please continue to advise!...See MorePros and Cons: Floor Tile With Large Grout Lines
Comments (17)Thanks to all of you for your personal experiences! Chispa, Your point about the ka-chunk is valid, since I may use a wheelchair someday, and will be using a wheeled walker and a wheeled stool. While the wheelchair's tires may not do that, the stool's wheels will, and moving around on the uneven floor will be difficult for that stool. I think that I was not letting myself see that the tile really would leave an uneven floor surface. I was thinking that the slippery surface was not an issue because of all of the grout, so your experience is helpful there, too. The tiles are only 2" x 2.25" and I was imagining the foot having contact with lots of grout with each step. If the recessed grout really does not do this, though, it is good to know! A Sawenz, this is supposed to be a floor tile, and it is porcelain, but I see your point about the PEI number. I will keep that in mind as I look at other floor tiles. I have been looking for porcelain, rather than ceramic, for the harder material....See MoreWhich GROUT for thin glass mosaic tiles?
Comments (16)Contemporganic-- regardless of the BS above-- what you might do is look on Artistic's literature. I'm pretty sure they also list an ANSI spec to follow for the thinset and grout. That you DO have to adhere to, because that will tell you whether or not another manufacturer's thinset or grout is an acceptable alternative. That said, I've talked with the people at Artistic Tile before, and they WILL accept Laticrete's 254 Platinum, 255 nonsag, or GTA (glass tile adhesive) thinsets. They will also accept Permacolor grout. I've never called them about using the Select, but I don't see where there would be any difference. I would be nervous about using the Prism, though, for the reasons I mentioned above. If you have any questions on ANY of this, Artistic Tile lists their phone number on their literature. You can ask them directly. That will clear up any questions as to what advice you should or shouldn't take....See MoreAng Hobbs
