installing thin glass tile next to thicker tile on a wall
Comments (9)This is what I did in my kitchen and it came out perfectly (the tile guys had better close their eyes now). I went to the craft store and bought some 1/8" thick balsa wood strips and I drew lines on my wall where I wanted the glass tile stripe to be. I then tacked up the balsa wood to mask the stripe. I used drywall compound to build up the 1/8" thick stripe because it was my backsplash and wasn't going to get wet but if I were doing this in a bathroom I'd use thinset. Basically I used a flat putty knife to fill the space between the two pieces of balsa and when I was done and it was dry I had the perfect "platform" to lay the glass tile on. I did it this way because I knew I did not have the practice, skill, or the "touch" to build up thinset on the fly under the glass tile. I do have pictures of my method somewhere if you need them, I'd have to dig them up but I can do that. I was REALLY pleased with how it came out - the thinner glass tile when set is perfectly flush with the thicker field tile....See MoreThin mosaic tile border and thicker field tile?
Comments (3)Either the use of a thicker bed of thisnet or by using something to bring the mosaics out a little further. That could be something like Ditra, which would bring it out about an 1/8", or if it doesn't need to come out that far, they could even use strips of Kerdi or some other membrane to build it out in a uniform manner. No self respecting pro would tell you sorry, that's the way it goes! If they can't, or won't do it right, I'd hand them their walking papers....See MoreWhich backsplash is easier to DIY-subway tile or glass mosaic?
Comments (13)mycatz-- We bought a wet saw. I just taught myself how. I have already done 3000 sq. ft of hardwoods and plenty of finish work on this house so figured I can do tile as well. Its a long story but we have an absentee builder and a bank who says we must finish, even though they chose our builder. I have learned a great many things from doing all this and feel I could tackle just about anything. Oh and yes you may have to put in extensions,we had to anyway as we have extensive beadboard and need extensions for that as well. Here is some of what I have been working on. Cabs will be white, haven't decided if I am going with lt grey or white grout yet....See MoreGlass mosaic - sanded or I sanded grout?
Comments (2)FWIW, our tile guy used a mix of sanded and unsanded grout with our glass tile splash (wider grout lines than yours perhaps). Not sure of the exact proportions, but could look it up in my folders. They were very careful and didn't scratch any of the tiles....See Morecontemporganic
