ideas to update large kitchen ceiling wood/florescent light box

Last part of our kitchen renovation: tackling modernizing of large kitchen ceiling light box with 6 florescent tubes flooding space with light over 8’ island. Ceiling is high: 11 foot. Two outlets take care of lights, which are now about $40 each to replace. (We don’t want to get rid of it and add chandeliers at this time.)

We want to: 1) get ideas for type of new lights, how many, and placement to go inside box. 2) get ideas on what to replace 6 plastic rectangles that light goes through: always seem to darken and look tacky. Would you get clear panels, made with what? Or is there better panel that’s used for diffusion? 3) Would you add cam lights and where and what kind, or add long tube lights or other kind of lights? 4) lastly could keep box and do something else creative with it.

I’ve looked on YouTube etc and there is scant advice. Designers, can you help?
