This is my favorite echinacea

, it's not the best photo but I love it! The best part it reliably comes back year after year!

I love that one, Marigold! I am planning on adding more this spring and will look for that one. Mt. Cuba Center has a huge study on Echinacea with ratings in various categories. I only have the purple coneflowers at the moment.

Mt Cuba Echinacea

This is the little summary they give for the Green Jewel: "Echinacea purpurea ‘Green Jewel’ was discovered by Piet Oudolf and introduced by Future Plants in the Netherlands. ‘Green Jewel’ is unique in that it was the only Echinacea with pure green flowers in our trial. It displayed a double row of horizontally held light green ray petals surrounding a dark green cone. As the flowers age the petals wash out and appear more white than green. Yellowing foliage, a potential symptom of aster yellows, was observed in this cultivar as well as damage from eriophyid mites in the center of the cones."

Very nice! I tried growing this once (I think from seed) but had a bad season and the seedlings didn't survive. I will have to try again!

I mostly have just purple and White Swan echinacea. I started some Green Twister last year from seed. They didn't seem to do well so I started more this year, and now last year's are coming back quite well and strong, as well as the new seedlings doing well. Looking forward to them!

Also, I was completely smitten with pictures here on GW of Rainbow Marcella, so I bought some of those this spring. Fingers crossed for those too!

Everything still looks wonderful, but you can see that the garden is slipping into fall though. How nice that you've had such a long bloom from your vitex. What are the white flowers in front of the vitex? I especially like Reed's little garden - its just the perfect size and its got lots of interest. Funny I always thought monkshood was a fall bloomer, but the only one I have bloomed months ago. Then again my 'Fireworks' is just getting started. Michelle

Nevermore, I've had my "Green Envy" for four years and it's still in my holding area for new plants, this bed gets morning sun and by 3:30 it's in the shade. Since I've read so many have had trouble with the color fading I've left it where it is. Our summer temps hang in the mid 70's most years, when we by chance hit the 80's or rarely a 90 I'm hiding in the house whining. I'll take rain (we have dull, wet, soggy springs) over high temps any day. Annette

I do know about MT Cuba Cyn thank you! There's also a newer green coneflower called Echinacea SunSeekers Apple Green I'm thinking of trying it!

diggerdee, I tried Green Twister it didn't survive the winter, I'm also thinking of getting White Swan, I heard good things about it. Is White Swan a good bloomer?

Marigold I would say White Swan is a pretty good bloomer. To be honest the last few years I haven't noticed them much. They're in an old bed, one which is pretty neglected now. When I first planted the coneflowers, they reseeded so prolifically that I ripped out an awful lot. Then when my gardening focus changed and this bed got neglected, well, the neglect got the better of everything in it. If I recall, I feel like currently the purple coneflowers bloom more than the White Swan, But it could be that I ripped out more WS than purple (who knows when they're seedlings??) or maybe they don't seed as prolifically as the purple. But this bed is almost 25 years old and I'd say the first five to seven years were good, before the neglect lol.

diggerdee, I also enjoy Magnus it blooms a lot despite it's in a shady location!

Echinaceas perform really well in my garden. I have many varieties, but my favorite is not a fancy one. It’s Bright Star. It blooms for about 9 weeks and gently reseeds, which enables me to gift it to friends. I love its soft pink color because it goes well with everything else in my garden.

That being said, I love to try new varieties and this year I added Supreme Cantaloupe and Sunseekers Rainbow.

Green Jewel looks like a keeper!!
