Gosh, I haven't commented in a week and I'm so behind. I hope this week I can take the time to respond to more people, but I wanted to take a moment this morning to respond to just a couple.
I really can't say enough how kind and encouraging everyone is. Diane, your kind words brought me to tears... I've learned so much over the past 3 years here and it really hit me to get such nice feedback from folks that I've learned from! I'm also 5 months pregnant, so maybe I'm just a little extra sentimental.
I can't remember who commented about getting a free Emily Brönte from DA as an apology. I think that maybe they're giving EB away because she's easy to propagate and vigorous on her own roots. In fact, in my garden she is a climber.... but I didn't know she would be. She really ought to be sold just as a climber and not as a shrub....fair warning to folks.
I peg her to get nice laterals, but she's a little stiff and would really benefit from being tied horizontally onto a sturdy trellis.
All of that said, EB is one of the absolute best fragrances in my garden, fruity and old rose and strong. I also love her super prolific and nearly thornless clusters on long stems. She's great for flower arrangements and her old fashioned bloom form reminders me of Madame Hardy, Madame Planter and the like.
She fades to white but in an elegant way.
I also call her Bröntesaurus because she's so huge. More than 5 feet wide and her laterals (coming off the pegged canes) want to grow up to our roof. Remember, I'm 5'9.
These photos are all from June of this year, the beginning of her third season.
