Are you looking at ripping out and replacing it all? If so a floor plan with all dimensions would help, along with a budget.

We need a to scale floorplan of the whole kitchen and breakfast space . Every window, doorways and where the doorways lead . Every measurement clearly marked , plumbing position if not able to be accessed fairly easily. Do the drawing on graph paper it makes it much easier to do Post here in jpeg format so we can enlarge it. You will get a ton of free advice take it or leave but IMO a lot of it is given from years of experience from pros. This of course is if your are planning a complete redo. If not then we nstill need the floor plan but we need info from you as to what you arewilling to do.

We had a similar situation with an attractive but not very functional kitchen that constantly had me thinking about remodeling. Fortunately, we were able to carve out some ill-used space to make a super-functional walk-in pantry so now the kitchen doesn't bother me. I'm guessing you have a pantry behind the closed door, and perhaps a mudroom/laundry behind the open doorway? With a remodel, I could see taking out the small angled counter housing the sink and installing a large island that extends into the breakfast nook (removing the seating there, possibly will have space for counter seating, depending on the dimensions of the space). You could also raise the cabinets to the ceiling and install a shelf underneath to remove some of the countertop clutter.

If so, how many people actually eat at the peninsula bar area? Is there another eating area?

You could add a four or six seat round table in your triangle area, then remove the bar stools entirely. That would give you more functional work space at the sink and a more comfortable place for people to sit.

I think the first thing you need to do is get brutal on what you have. do you really need the mixer on the counter? the toaster oven etc… pull everything out and reduce any duplicate items, pull what is not used at least 2-3 /wk out.

the freezer in the middle. how often do you access? can it go somewhere less prominate? we inherited a chest freezer which we thought would be great. what we found is that foods would go in but rarely come out. so we got rid of it.

if you are planning on replacing the cabinets get drawers. we changed to drawers and our tiny kitchen holds so much more.

Hmm, consider not having any items on the stove wall except what you need to cook with. The mixer might be better placed on the opposite diagonal corner at the end of the sink run. The toaster over needs to be on the opposite wall too. You have a fridge that draws a lot of people to it, so the freezer needs to be relocated not in the kitchen...but it might squeeze into the eating area. Hang your paper towels from the bottom of a cabinet next to the sink, not on the counter. Find a small flat tray to corral all your sink stuff so it looks orderly.....dish soap, hand soap, sponge. You might also consider a shelf with a hanging rack for your pots and pans on the wall adjacent to the fridge, with basket storage containers on the shelf for things used occasionally.

Thank you for the comments! I do need to declutter our kitchen. It is a task I have been putting off. I like the idea of hanging pots, and I would like to store the appliances in the pantry. There is an L-shaped one behind the door, but the shelving needs to be replaced. We do plan on moving the chest freezer to the garage, but we need to install an outlet first. Side note, who makes a garage without an outlet? We would like to rip everything out and redo all of it especially since half of the cabinet doors will not stay closed, the upper cabinets are not deep enough inside to hold a standard sized plate, the laminate counters are textured so you have to scrub them down constantly (we have young kids too) and it is annoying having to walk around the angled peninsula. I attached pictures of the floor plan that I drew. I am not a professional so hopefully everything is labeled clearly. The part of the picture that says dining room was intended to be the family room, and the triangle part was supposed to be the eating nook. It works out better having a single eating place. Since our kids are all under 4, we do not sit them at the counter to eat, but I like having an island or peninsula so they can help cook. Would having different stools help with line of sight? Any suggestions are a huge help!
