Bariatric surgery - Any experience or advice?
Comments (31)Thanks all for a lot of good advice. I shared this thread with my friend. She is also getting additional feedback from others including professional advice from her doctor. Like some of you commented, Baraiatric surgery today seems quite different than a few years ago. I also asked our family doctor who is quite conservative and his opinion was that it depends on co-morbities like diabetes, high cholesterol etc. For many people this is resolved. However, it is but a tool and lifestyle changes are key. Unlike procedures like Lap band which has issues like slippage, vomiting etc., and more drastic procedures like gastric bypass where there is serious issues with not being able to absorb enough vitamins and such, the specific procedure that she is looking at is sleeve gastrectomy that leaves the intestines intact. She will need to take calcium everyday. A chewable vitamin is good as eating very less food initially is very stressful for the body. But once the sutures are healed, she can eat normal food for most part.. Just less of it and more protein. A very hard decision but she has a good support group among friends and family....See MoreIf you have Apple TV/Roku/any other movie-streaming device
Comments (7)We have a Roku ... the company I work for has a wireless chip inside so a number of us at the office were given the Roku as a Christmas present a couple years ago. The Roku is very, very easy to use. Setup probably took all of five minutes. When Netflix was not charging to stream videos, it was a very good deal but now they charge $8 for mail order DVDs and $8 for streaming. Old movies aren't all that hard to find in regular programming with the cable service we have but I love watching documentaries, which are harder to come by, so streaming is good for that. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. Jodi-...See MoreOT About a Toy. Any Advice?
Comments (10)Yesterday I did a little search for clones of the Disney model that is discontinued and found many. I had a tidy little post all typed up with links for similar TV interactive toys in that price range and then *poof* the electricity here went out in the storm........only momentarily but I lost my whole post with all the links I found. I was so mad. I just said "I'm not going to look for it all again." Anyway, there are similar devices not made by VTech. The Leap Frog Click Start is a toy for ages 3-8 that can hook up to a TV. The software is abundant. http://www.leapfrog.com/en/families/clickstart/learning_systems/cs_clickstart.html Here is a link that might be useful: Leap Frog...See MoreAny advice for dealing with people with hearing issues?
Comments (28)My Mother and all of her siblings have some extent of hearing loss. My Mother is 83 and has been at probably 98% hearing loss for years. Even with hearing aids, having a conversation with her is difficult. Unless we're in the car. She can hear in a "confined" area. (I guess we could get together in a large closet for a conversation LOL) I convinced her to get a smart phone so she could text people, as she cannot hear well on the phone. She does have a Caption Phone she uses some. To watch TV she also uses head phones. Fortunately, she recognizes her hearing loss and does what she can to help herself. I too, have hearing loss. I've been wearing digital hearing aids for about 7 years. (got them at the young age of 51) They help, but they do not restore your hearing. I have about 50% loss in one and 45% in the other. Guess it's genetic. (and too many R&R concerts as a teen) I am doing everything I can to save what hearing I have. I have custom made ear plugs, and I use them if I'm around any loud machinery -- including when I blow dry my hair. Do you know how many decibels of noise those things put out? Part of my problem is I can "hear" but don't always comprehend what is said. Hearing aids are just that -- AIDS. They're not a cure all. Morz is correct, the longer you put it off the harder it is to retrain the brain. But it's not impossible. By all means encourage your parents to get their hearing tested. If they do get hearing aids, they will be amazed at how much they help....See MoreLars
