Orange rose/companion plant color combo?
Comments (14)I particularly like the idea of the dramatic color combination, like the dark violet/deep red/orange combo that was suggested. The french lavender + artichoke already have pastel purple flowers and the silvery leaves there, and with the white rose in the back I'm worried the colors will be too "pastelly". I saw some California poppies "Mikado" seeds in the store today, so I'm thinking that dark flame orange color will do well if I place it in front of the light orange rose (there should be enough contrast between the two colors right?). Or does Echinacea have similar shades of dark orange/red? I like Agastaches as well, but would the scent conflict with the scents of the 2 David Austin roses I'll be planting? or do they have separate bloom seasons so it wouldn't matter? So many wonderful ideas, thank you! I'm going to have to compile a list of the plants everyone suggested and their respective pictures because I'm not familiar with a lot of the plants that were suggested (relatively newbie gardener here). Really excited to see what all the suggested plants might look like! :) This post was edited by technoduckling on Mon, Mar 4, 13 at 2:53...See MoreRose Companion Plants
Comments (21)My current favorite companion plant for my roses is geranium "Johnson's Blue" (pictured). I am not currently growing clematis with my roses, but a clematis growing up through a large shrub or climbing rose can be very beautiful. Selection of companion plants depends on climate. The following are just a few that I have used effectively with my roses in Southern California: snapdragons (the tall kinds), pelargonium "angel geranium", catmint, agapanthus (the short kinds), anchusa "Alkanet", lobelia erinus, marguerites and alstroemeria. There are countless additional possibilities. I would recommend experimenting with plants that look like they might provide good color, texture and height contrast....See MoreFavorite Companion Plant for roses
Comments (33)Hmm...all this white flies talk has me worried. I have a hibiscus plant I overwinter indoors that is a magnet for white flies. I've tried organic and inorganic pesticides. Last year, it wasn't until I tried the granular 'kill everything' Bayer product that I finally got rid of them. Or course this year I have them again. Additionally, it has affected another potted plant. I hate to kill plants but should I just get rid of both plants to prevent the white flies from expanding into the roses in summer? Straw, I'm going to try the curry and clove solution. good to know! Jim, the rabbits don't go over your fence for tender growth?...See MoreOT - blue and lavender companion plants in the garden
Comments (21)I don't think this is very off-topic, actually, since so many of us seem to enjoy using blue and purple companions for our roses! Here are some of my favorites... Asters Allium christophii and Verbascum phoeniceum (with 'Jacques Cartier') Geranium 'Rozanne', Russian sage, Bachelor buttons, and Verbena bonariensis: Clematis 'Etoile Violette' (photobombing 'Great Maidens Blush') Iris and delphinium (here with 'Abraham Darby') Hydrangeas (here with 'Charles Darwin') Sweet peas (sharing a pot with 'The Prince') Nepeta and chives (with 'Blush Noisette' and 'Abraham Darby') Hollyhock and lavender...with a bit too much Verbena bonariensis! Nigella Poppies, Echinops, purple dahlias, and Erysimum 'Bowles mauve' are other favorites, but I think I've posted too many photos already!...See Moredianela7analabama
