It doesnt have to have its back to the wall. Cant help much more without some info on the space and what the shlves are used for.

Add a large plant or artificial potted plant to the back of the shelving unit that has no wall behind it.

Like so many issues there are no pics so we work in the dark. Post pictures , a floor plan and what you need the shelving for . All of that in comments on this post DONOT start another post.

Would the shelving style and room allow it to be used as a room divider. Can it go in another room. Worse case scenario, sell/buy a smaller one on Marketplace.

Sell your shelving unit on Nextdoor or similar and put the money toward a new one that fits.

If the side console is not attached, can it go elsewhere. If not, can whole piece be turned around and the shorter piece won’t be as prominent sticking out. If not, leave as is as it’s not a big issue and you mentioned you were living there temporarily.

Agree with Sabrina. You need something that fits.

I actually think it does not look bad especially for a temp situation. I would not sell it as it appears to match the piece next to it. I think it is a very nice piece of furniture.

Just use decore to fill the corners of the shelving unit. For example a large vase in the corner, large photo on the shelf in the corner, etc. So the few inches of not covering the wall, won't be that noticeable and visible, therefore won't bother you.

Something, I noticed.....the light switch.....do you need to access it?

I was going to say what maureen said. Either turn it, so the lower piece is the one sticking out, or separate the two sections and use them independantly. The shorter section could be a bedside table, or a dining room sideboard or even a front door table for keys and purses.

Also, scroll past the people who aren’t helpful. Sounds like thier blood sugar is low.

What’s left of the shorter piece? is the shorter piece for a TV?

Since it is temporary, just leave it be. Once you put stuff on it, you probably won't notice. It really doesn't look that bad.

Thank you to those of you who are giving positive suggestions. This piece is very special. It was in a ocean front mansion on Long Beach Island NJ. It fit perfectly in my previous apartment. I would like to figure out a way to make look as nice as possible in my current rental. Many of you have some really good ideas. Thank you, I appreciate your help.

I think it looks fine but it might be nice to separate the pieces if there is room for one of the taller ones else where in the apartment.

You said this home is “temporary”. You obviously love this piece (as you should - it’s unique and beautiful) but it’s not working on that wall. Removing part of it, as Jan suggested, knowing it can be put back later is the best idea. One piece can be used in your bedroom or in your dining area. Check to see if this can be separated for this non-permanent domain.

Next house you can return it to its normal set up.

It’s quite special, so be careful. Otherwise, ignore that it doesn’t fit and keep it intact. It’s not so terrible.

It’s very clearly THREE pieces and one of them has a TV on it.

I’d embrace it and put a large potted plant next to the area that’s sticking out on the right. Just extend the space even more.

Don't talk down to this OP. There have been several excellent suggestions given to her to consider, she does not have to go with your particular suggestion. A couple of us have recognized that the minor extension is no big deal, and a few saying that they think it will be even less of a deal once there is stuff on the shelves. Let her choose what she is most comfortable with.

The way I see it you have two options. Use the TV stand alone or use the two towers and hang the TV on the wall, find another place for the console or store it. The electric fireplace is very fun but you are going to have to break the set up to make this work as far as style goes. The other option is to become 'nose blind' to the hang over.
