Dead branch in crabapple tree?

This main limb in my ornamental crab does not look good. It budded out and then we had a late frost. What do you think, should I cut it out or wait for next year? The smaller branches still flex.

Pic in next comment. As you can see it will leave a large hole in the tree when removed.

id give it time to see if it releafs after the frost...

dead is dead.. when the decision is made.. you properly prune it out.. the tree will fill back out.. in tree time.. might take 3 to 5 years or so..

i wonder if thats the only crab in the world.. that hasnt suckered wildly....

where are you.. z5 is about half the US.. big city name.. how bad was this frost???

We are in the same position. Our fig tree was about 20 feet high and just as wide until this past winter killed most of it. The main trunk started generation shoots so we cut the trunk back to where the shoots are and cut all of the other bare dead trunks down to the ground. We left a few of the larger shoots coming out of the base and cut off the rest of the suckers. We figure we will see what starts to take off while trimming out the new suckers over the summer. Hopefully we will get figs next year.

It depends...if you're like me and have wildlife issue then I like to leave ALL the wood on for the winter.

Citrus trees should never be severely pruned, only the suckers from below the graft need to be trimmed off. this tree looks to be underwatered to me. citrus needs deep, slow watering about every 7-10 days in summer in the Phoenix area. You should have a well around the tree that goes about a foot past the tips of the branches, and let water slowly soak the entire area. Water needs to reach a soil depth of at least 2 feet. If yours is just getting watered on the same schedule as your lawn, that's not good for it. I don't think it would hurt it to cut off the dead branches.

Ditto. If it is obviously dead prune i. If not when would u all wait for? The next big summer holiday?

Between Indy and Chicago for location. The fact that the lower branch I can reach is still flexible gives me hope that it is not dead. I will be mad at myself if I cut out the major section of the top of the tree and it is not dead.
