Help with Kitchen Design
I live in a California style mid century house built in 1964 by Scholz called a “Mark 60”…It’s a very cool house. We are redoing the kitchen and I don’t like typical mid century design as far as furniture and kitchens…I don’t want to screw anything up but it’s my money and I absolutely love inset cabinets and want to get them. We will be buying Shiloh cabinets…I know I want warm inviting neutral tones with clean lines and texture…I just don’t know how to get it with inset cabinets not looking to traditional…Below are some pictures of my colors I’m thinking of doing and my current fireplace that’s probably not changing…Thanks! :)

Comments (13)removing windows and putting in a door is easier than vice versa. remove the brick, frame out the area for the door, install. if you want to bring up the floor level,(what do you plan on doing w/the fireplace? you would have to redo it and the book cases) for the new floor, they would have to lay joists, sub floor, and flooring to even it out to the other. At this point I would advise you to replace all of that white tile and do the same flooring throughout the first level. can you match the wood you have in the other room? .Oh, demo of all that tile? 1-2 K (can't see how much you have) remove a window and install french doors, about 2-4K. building a banquette? have no idea. 1-2K? new table, custom made cushions, etc. I don't mind the sunken part. I'd do the french doors and close off that other door by the nook. would be cool if you could extend that whole side of the house further out another 6-10 feet. I'd rather do that than raise the floor level. i'd also widen your stair area leading down. on the living side, you could do something like this w/stair sides (little built ins) install a cool beam above it: or move the stairs to one side If you replaced your windows w/doors, you could do one large sofa, and place the two chairs as you come down the stairs. (that's why it might be nice to move the stairs off to one side, gives you a bit more space. or try this layout. you may have enough room to walk behind the other sofa in front of the doors. Comments (10)Have you thought about whether you will have enough cabinets if you add a window? It depends on how much stuff you have. Some people keep enough food for the apocalypse and some people have every sort of kitchen appliance on the market. So whether you would have enough cabinets depends on how you outfit your kitchen and how much food you keep. I don't think there's anything wrong with Option B. Symmetry does appeal to some people, but it's not really necessary. I think a kitchen needs to be practical above all. I like to have a cabinet for dishes right over the dishwasher because that makes it easy to unload. 11 months agoYes. That’s it. We are turning it into a galley style taking out the L and taking out the original drop ceiling…current cabinets are very traditional (previous owners 1990 kitchen remodel). I just want something more transitional. I can live with a mid century kitchen. I was thinking a slim shaker cabinet but it’s hard to find that in an inset…Maybe because it’s new or maybe because it’s a mistake?

11 months agolast modified: 11 months agoSorry, but I would not do inset in a small kitchen. As mentioned, you will lose interior space as compared to frameless cabinetry. You don't have to make it "straight-up mid-century". It's not black and white like that. There are middle grounds. Inset is not only wrong for the house, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice in how you are utilizing the limited space in your small kitchen. A number of posts on this forum over the years of people saying they can't even fit their dinner plates in the upper cabinets that are inset. Those inset uppers are typically about 10" deep on the interiors - how big are your dinner plates?
You can still do cabinets that are in-between the traditional look of inset and the more modern look of kitchen cabinets in frameless construction. I don't see a problem with a Shaker door with thinner stiles in your home - but in frameless not inset construction.

11 months agoFridge is moving to the pantry area one we open into galley. We do already have all the appliances. Not sure about frameless. Attached is the floor plan my husband drew up.
