@BeverlyFLADeziner How wide are the windows pictured? Do you ever open the shutters on all 4 windows? I plan to actually open all 5 shutters so they'd all be sticking out

What's leading you to choose shutters? Those windows would look great with roman shades and then when they're open they aren't a problem.

If you’re opening those windows and shutters every day, it can be a pain, especially if you have furniture nearby. I have mostly two panels opening from the middle and a few single open on side that I thought would not get much use. Well, I was right, I open maybe once a year - they are a PIA to use. I’d go with a nice wood blind similar to shutters slat width.

You have a nice view why on earth do you want heavy looking window coverings to block at least 1/2 of it . IMO some caharcoal or bronze solar shades and if privacy at night is an issue some drapes . I honestly dislike shutters in most cases they are expensive and IMO too heavy looking for most homes You could do roman shades instead of drapes but not those shutters IMHO.

If you want view then shutters are not the solution

The only windows on which I have installed shutters are those where I require privacy. Bathrooms. Powder rooms, etc. I never open them completely on their hinges; I open the louvers for light control, as needed. Otherwise, I have Roman shades, draperies, etc., all of which can be completely open.

If you like and want shutters, I hope you won’t let others talk you out of them.

I think they look great and have never found them to be a pain to open and close (had them at a former house). In my area, they add value.

I’d consult with a pro from whatever company you’re using to advise you on the best ones for your needs. I had the kind that folded back on each side, and opened them often. I liked the looks, the privacy and light control when needed, and view when opened.

I have wood blinds now (and some windows with shades), but miss my shutters.

I agree with Jilly…consult a pro. We have shutters throughout the house and love them.

Agree with Jilly. Some here become downright aggressive towards shutters, but they are loved by many of us who invested in them for our homes. Definitely consult with a local knowledgeable professional.

The most satisfying reveal in my home renovation so far was not the installation of new windows, new doors, new floors, a vaulted ceiling, or the removal of a wall; it was the day the shutters got ripped out. I will never have bulky, light-blocking dust collectors in my home ever again. There are people who like everything but seriously look at all the other options before committing to these - there are much better options. Better yet, find some inspiration photos of how you'd like these spaces to look and then look at the window treatments. I bet you won't see shutters.

The OP should absolutely do what she’d like in her home, just as you did. Maybe shutters, maybe not. But just because some of you hate them so much doesn’t mean they’re wrong for everyone and it gets old seeing that pushed here all the time.

I guess we see different inspiration photos — I see shutters in many.

I’m sure the OP will be talked out of them as so many are, even though she wasn’t asking if she should use them or not, she was asking about types …. but I do hope it’s solely based on what works best for her.

Ask about cabinet colors and you're guaranteed that someone will immediately demand you post a to scale floor plan and after you do, threaten to report you to law enforcement because your aisles aren't wide enough.

While that can be annoying, it can also help people reconsider bad ideas. I've certainly done so!

OP's free to do whatever she wants. Maybe she's head-over-heels in love with the look of shutters, or maybe she just hasn't given it a ton of thought. I'm sure she could find some inspiration photos with shutters if she was looking for them, but my suggestion is to instead look at or find some inspiration photos without having a preconceived notion of what should be on the windows, and then look at the window treatments used. I just scrolled the House Beautiful "rooms" page and you can't find shutters in any of the dozens of images.

My post isn’t saying otherwise. Of course that’s a facet of advice forums. Especially this one. I said it gets old seeing the same people push the same mantras and dictates here year after year after year (ok, I didn’t elaborate that much, but I was thinking it!) when someone wants to do something they like in their house. And acting like it’s every OP’s first rodeo.

Holly, one of the many pros on my list for our shutters is the ease of cleaning. Swiffer dusters and a damp cloth make it easy. More so than window treatments with fabric IMO.

As Jilly mentioned, they add value to a home where we are…unlike most other window treatments.

I’m sure whatever you choose will be lovely.

Holly, I am NOT opposed to shutters (outside OR inside) for your home. Because I have them in my home (and outside my home!), I know they can be expensive. You know that, too. What I am simply suggesting is that you think about how you will use them and if they are the best way to “dress” your windows. If you conclude that they are, then…as others here have suggested…consult a PRO who sells them and ask their advice. I have had great success with Hunter Douglas. I didn’t know that they now sell shutters without tilt bars and center stiles, that permit you to control the light on the top or bottom independently. Lots of new technology. A full window shutter can be big AND heavy to open. Half window shutters are an option. Bifold shutters, too. Your home has beautiful windows. We don’t know your budget. Good luck with your project!
