Design Dilemma Home Decorating Exterior

what color/style shutters and window boxes?

My husband and I just moved in to our first home, a mid-century Cape Cod. We’d like to repaint or replace the shutters and add window planters. What color/style do you recommend we go with for both? The house is brick, painted a sage green color. The front door is an espresso-like color, which we are open to changing. Eventually, we’d like to replace the windows with ones with grids (or grills, or whatever they’re called :)

Thanks in advance for your help. Any other suggestions for the exterior are welcome, too!

I like you home as is.

Here is your home with some of what you are thinking about. Grids are going to be difficult. You could change the shutters to white if you want a more cottage like appearance.

I like your idea of replacing the windows with more traditional grids. I think if you got windows that are divided in half with a mullion to look like two windows (for the 1st floor windows), it would look better. Windows are the eyes of the home. The blank slider windows look hollow.

I think I'd just do a window box under the window on the right and remove the shutters. Your home is asymmetrical, so I'd embrace the asymmetry.

Paint the front door and window box a full gloss, very dark blue.

Add some pots with colorful annuals on the porch.

Thanks for the help everyone. I went ahead and ordered them in white. But only bc I'm still unsure. They can be painted (which is what they do if I order the black). I am going to try them on the house in white but if I am not happy I will take them down and have them painted. I think this is the safest way. I'll post some pics when done. We are scheduled to have it all done in June. There are 3 jobs in front of mine right now. Now to order new lights for the house....another difficult chore. Oy vey!

Good luck in your new darling house. I would remove the shutters and beef up the molding trim around the windows. Are you thinking of replacing the windows on the main level with two side by side windows or keep the picture window style? The sage green color is very nice and provides lots of options for front door color. Window boxes are nice but be careful to consider maintenance issues. when you install them. You do not want water to harm your sills or paint.
