Windows Design Dilemma Exterior

What do I do with these shutters and panels under the windows?

I recently purchased this home and want to update the shutters and panels underneath. Should I leave the shutters that length or shorten them to the window height? I was thinking about adding window boxes to hide the panels? Or maybe just growing bushes bigger to cover them up. Thoughts? I plan to paint the shutters a charcoal gray.

Put the sawz-all away. Get over to oldhouseweb.com and post there. You have access panels - they are on the inside of the window frames. Do you see any screw type bumps on the lower inside of the frames - aside where the lower sash moves up and down? There should be some type of screws buried under the paint. What size windows do you use 63' long WT panels on?

Back in the day when I used tie-back ruffled priscillas, I usually bought 63" length for bedrooms even tho my windows were about 42 inches long because (1) they were cheaper, and (2)I did not care that they were not floor length because my bedrooms are so small, there was usually a piece of furniture or part of the bed under the window. I actually preferred that length for tie-backs, which made them fall about halfway between the bottom of window and floor. I have never liked curtains the same length as my window, except over a sink. In my living/dining areas I usually went with floor length in this style (does anyone remember the Dorothy's Ruffled Originals). That was me. Now I prefer panels, shirred to the side, covering very little of the window, hanging to the floor (not puddling). Like Greywings said, it is just whatever you prefer. Tuesday

Rotten wood under my window, how do I fix it?

How old is this house. If built in 1900-1920 the wood milled then was truer to size. That rot didn’t happen recently. It’s been building up over time. You probably need yo replace both window and framing to properly fit new window to eliminate problem. I would be concerned about wood condition below this window too. Water damage might go further. Best to figure that out too. Also, get checked for termites and carpenter ants. I know, it’s a pain but that’s just a part of home ownership. Good luck!

If you plan on redoing the flower beds, then I'd remove the panel and the long shutters.

you may like it without the panels or the shutters.

Those shrubs have to go though. they're scraggly and do nothing for your yard.

I like the idea of flower boxes.

not big on the gray. here's why

I do like black

this is how those shrubs are supposed to look!

this is beautiful w/the black shutters, white trim, and I also like this style door. consider replacing your hand rail with something like above.

a complete redo w/painted brick and wood shutters/posts.

these color combos might work. red for your door, Amherst for the shutters, white for trim.

I would remove the shutters. If you keep them then paint them gray to match the roof. Shutters should never go around a bay window or very wide window.

The panels below are flush with the brick so you can't simply remove them. You could put Hardie board there but I would not bother.

I am puzzled by the shutters as they do not seem to fit the modern design of the house. I think the door does not suit the house either.

There is room for improvement with the landscaping.
